The meteorological Winter (December 2023-February 2024; Figure 1a, upper left) was generally near normal for most of Puerto Rico, except for a few pockets near El Yunque and northwestern Puerto Rico.

The Virgin Islands were wetter than normal, and most CoCoRaHS stations registered amounts of nearly a foot of rain, which is 5 to 6 inches above the climatological value for Saint Thomas and Saint Croix (Figure 1c; upper left).
The most significant rainfall event was a frontal boundary stalling north of the region by the end of January.

Conditions turned wetter as the dry season was coming to an end in the eastern Caribbean (dry season ends early in April), and the meteorological spring (March-May; Figure 1a, upper right) ended way wetter than normal.

Some areas near El Yunque and western Puerto Rico collected over 40 inches of rain
The areas of clouds that reached the Virgin Islands were very generous in terms of accumulations, with Saint Thomas and Saint John observing 11 to 19 inches of rainfall and around 20 inches in Saint Croix. Any lingering effects from the drought were erased after these rains (Figure 1c; upper right).
Multiple upper-level troughs, frontal boundaries, and low-level disturbances were responsible for these rains.
The most significant event for this period was the flooding reported in San Sebastián, Yauco, and many other municipalities in western Puerto Rico. Many rivers went out of their banks, causing multiple rescues and significant property losses.

Moving into the summer months (June to August), and the onset of the 2024 Hurricane Season, conditions calmed down, in terms of rain. This is partially caused by the mid-summer drought when tropical waves usually move well south of the island and Saharan dust becomes more frequent.

However, the season still ended wetter than normal, mostly due to the outer bands from former Hurricane Ernesto.
Areas of eastern and western Puerto Rico again ended with rainfall amounts of 35 to over 50 inches (Figure 1a; lower left)!
Saint John and Saint Thomas also saw amounts of 20 to 25 inches of accumulation, while Saint Croix registered 15 to 20 inches. These amounts are well above the climatological value for the islands (Figure 1c; lower left).

The beginning of the meteorological fall was no exception to the generally wet conditions observed in the islands. Although no significant rain was observed since Ernesto, September brought several tropical waves and upper-level troughs that caused localized flooding and mudslides.

Conditions did become wetter by October as distance Hurricane Kirk and another low-pressure system shifted the wind pattern in the eastern Caribbean. Stronger showers and thunderstorms were more common, especially across the interior and western Puerto Rico.
By the end of October and early November, the most significant event of the season was observed, as a series of cold fronts and a polar trough moved near the area, making showers much more frequent. A Flood Watch was needed for this event, as the soils remained very saturated.
In general, eastern and western Puerto Rico were the most impacted by these systems, but the rain did not reach the interior, where a slight rainfall deficit was observed (Figure 1a, lower right).
The Virgin Islands continued with uninterrupted wet spells, with amounts ranging from 15 to 25 inches across the main islands (Figure 1c, lower right).
