Murder Reports Over Time
The 3D map demonstrates the amount of murders in a certain area over time. The murder points feature is sorted by date and time to organize and cluster the data. The points are then grouped by area and the extrusions represent the change in reports over time. High extrusions represent continued reports of murder in that area.
Violence and Income Based Statistics
The maps below show the crimes recorded in Rochester separated into the categories of violent and non violent crimes. These layers overlay another layer displaying the average income in different areas of the city. These maps test correlations between house income and crime.
Violent Crimes Clusters
Non-violent Crimes Clusters
The maps clearly show a correlation between violent crimes and income showing a concentration of non violent crimes in high income areas. This is opposed to non-violent crimes which are proportionally spread throughout both areas of low and high income.
Robbery
Robbery Clusters
Then we have robbery. There has been 8,365 accounts of robbery recorded in Rochester since 2011. As you can see by the density clustering on the map, the reports of robbery are spread very evenly across the city but are centered in the middle or down town Rochester area.
Larceny
There has been 77,407 accounts of larceny reported in Rochester since 2011. Larceny adds up to 58% of the overall crime making it the most occurring in the city.
Larceny 80-20 Analysis
The map above presents an 80-20 analysis of larceny reports. The 80-20 analysis groups together high report areas to show where areas of cases are disproportional. As observed, the larger blue dots on the map located towards the northern and southern ends of the city represent areas with high reports. Other than those hot spot areas, the larceny reports seem to be proportionally spread through the city.
Procedure
To gain the results for this lab I collected my crime data from the Rochester Police Department crime databases and my income data from the City of Rochester's open data portal. I separated the data into the specific crimes and used different geoprocessing tools to organize the data. For the violent and non violent crime along with robberies I used density-based clustering to point out hot spots within the data. To analyze the murder statistics I used the feature to 3D by Time tool to show how the reports changed over time. Finally in the analysis of Larceny I used a crime tool 80-20 analysis so find disproportionate data.
