Neurodevelopmental Centers of Excellence of Washington

Providing therapies and related services to young children with neuromuscular or developmental disorders.

Neurodevelopmental Centers

The Neurodevelopmental Centers of Washington (NDC) are community non-profit and hospital-based agencies who provide therapy and related services to young children with neuromuscular or developmental disorders. They are located across the state, each one serving the specific needs of its community.

NDCs provide speech, occupational and physical therapies. They also offer consultation referrals based on a primary care provider's recommendation. Other services may include nursing, nutrition, social work, educational services, adaptive equipment, computer-assisted communication therapy, and hydrotherapy.

All professional staff at NDCs are pediatric specialists and deliver the highest quality care services. NDCs across the state stay connected to share information and provide training and education opportunities for their staff.

Working with families to identify needs

Children and youth with neuromuscular and developmental disorders have complex health care needs. NDC service coordinators work with families to help identify and meet their needs. They also teach families to find their way through the health care system and help coordinate care.

Connecting with NDCs

Families can connect with an NDC for their child’s needs; the primary care providers or other professionals may also refer them.

NDCs offer specialized services that offer allow children to catch up in their development. Without these services, children will not make the amazing gains they do when properly served.

Family Story:

My son, Owen, spent the first 103 days in the NICU at Tacoma General Hospital. He was born with two chromosomal abnormalities. We were terrified of how we would raise our son with significant physical and cognitive disabilities outside of the hospital. Our family was incredibly lucky to have the support of Birth to Three Developmental Center in Federal Way. They worked to support Owen with different therapies. As Owen nears age 3, we’ve had to learn an entirely new system as he transitions to the school district. This is a daunting task for a family with a typical child, but when your child has significant disabilities, the idea that you have to trust new people with your child is terrifying! Our team at Birth to Three has continued supporting us through this transition. Thanks to the at Birth to Three team that my family can be excited about the next stage in Owen’s life... Preschool! -Birth to Three Parent

Boyer Children's Clinic, Montlake Clinic

Early support services for young children with developmental delays and disabilities. Boyer is the largest provider of early support services in Seattle and serves the region’s most medically fragile children.

Family Story:

I'm writing to express my gratitude for everything the Boyer Clinic has done for my family and our son, Avi. He was born with tongue tie, lip tie, and buccal ties as well as torticollis that led to right side plagiocephaly. Sara [Boyer Physical Therapist] began working with Avi, and it was a huge help. We understood the landscape of options available to us, and we felt empowered to make the right choices for our family. We took Avi for a frenectomy, and Sara tried to understand why we were hesitant and to address our specific needs. Sara has also made us feel that we are capable and resourced - every time she leaves, we have a handful of impactful (but manageable!) actions that we can take to help Avi for the week ahead. I am so grateful for the guidance and deep compassion Sara and her colleagues have brought into our home.” –Boyer Parent

Family Story:

“My daughter loves attending playgroup. She always runs into class and is greeted by Imelda at the door. I love the environment my daughter is in. Her teachers, Imelda and Maria, are great at what they do.” - Children's Developmental Center Parent Provider statement: "I am a pediatric urology nurse practitioner at Seattle Children’s Hospital. I cannot emphasize enough the significant impact that Laura McGuckin (Children's Development Center) has made on my practice and the lives of my patients. I commonly refer patients to her with issues ranging from urinary incontinence to recurrent urinary tract infections. I feel confident knowing that my patients will receive outstanding, equitable care from Laura and the Children’s Developmental Center as a whole. I have referred patients to Laura that I had treated without any success in getting them continent. Laura was able to help them get them control of their bladders which is life changing for them. I feel extremely fortunate to have Laura and the Children’s Developmental Center as a resource in the Tri Cities area." -Jaqueline Catalano, ARNP Seattle Children’s Hospital Tri-Cities satellite Urology Clinic

Children's Therapy Center, Kent, WA

Physical, occupational, speech, and feeding therapy; early special education; social work services; family resources coordination; infant mental health services for children with special needs in South King and Pierce counties.

Family Story:

Megan and Cassidy’s son, Warren, was diagnosed with severe swallowing dysfunction at the age of two months. “The first 8 weeks of his life were so traumatic,” Megan says. Warren was given a nasogastric tube to carry food and medicine to his stomach through his nose and was referred to Children’s Therapy Center for feeding therapy. “As new parents, we really felt thrown into the deep end with Warren’s diagnosis. I found myself relying really heavily on support from our therapists. “Initially, therapy focused on keeping Warren orally engaged while he received his nutrition from a tube. This was especially challenging because his feeding therapy services were being delivered through telehealth during the pandemic. “We had to position the laptop camera so that his therapists could see me and Warren while avoiding distracting him too much,” she says. “They focused on instructing and coaching me on ways to help him. “Warren has made great progress in feeding therapy and is exploring safely eating solid foods. “We see a lot of doctors, but we have such a connection with Children's Therapy Center. The staff has your child’s best interests in mind and are intimately involved with your family!”- Children's Therapy Center Parent

Child Strive

Partnering with families during the first critical years of development, building the caregiver’s capacity to support a lifetime of learning and development. ChildStrive's home visiting providers bring access to healthcare services and mental health support, for families to reach their goals.

Family Story:

“My son Tyler and I were first introduced to Childstrive Parents as Teachers and our parent educator Elizabeth in 2020, after my son and I began our journey with Child Protective Services. At the beginning of our journey, my son sustained several injuries and had gone into foster care for three months as I removed his father from our lives and became a single mom. When we were reunited, I needed to find ways to reconnect with him. Elizabeth helped us, and working with her it became clear that Tyler had some delays. She connected us with ChildStrive Early Support for Infants and Toddlers, and we began to see a physical therapist. The PT, plus additional interactions with Elizabeth as we played and discussed his development, helped Tyler quickly catch up and in a few months, he surpassed expectations for his age! My son can be very slow to warm up to people, but she has become a stable person in his life. He looked forward to every video visit for the first year and a half but has really opened up since our in-person visits began. I appreciate the reassurance ChildStrive gives me, and the support and resources they quickly provide when we run into life issues. I felt very lost, and I am so beyond glad that this program exists so women like Elizabeth can help families like mine.”- ChildrenStrive Parent

Holly Ridge Center, Infant Toddler Program

Providing early support services to children birth to 3 with developmental delays or who are medically fragile. Holly Ridge is the only program of this type on the Olympic Peninsula. Serving more than 1,000 children and their families each year throughout Kitsap and North Mason Counties.

Family Story:

I learned about Holly Ridge Center (HRC) through an online search. Clara was 12 months old when she was evaluated at Holly Ridge Center. Clara received speech therapy with oral motor feeding, special instruction, and nutrition services. I love that HRC views the needs of the child in a holistic manner. They provide home visits and are more flexible in scheduling to fit our family needs than other agencies we have used. Clara is my triple rainbow baby who arrived at 31 weeks gestation at 2lbs 15 ounces. She was discharged after staying 37 days in the NICU. I have received the assistance, education and tools needed to help my daughter thrive from HRC. Speech therapy gave me the tools to encourage her vocabulary and sign language to communicate with others. The instruction with oral motor feeding alleviated my anxiety with her struggles with food at that time. The nutritionist has problem solved ways to help Clara gain weight even when we had a few months where we didn’t see progress. The special instructor has taught me how to connect with my daughter in a way she finds fun to encourage her learning. My husband and I are grateful for the work that HRC does." - Holly Ridge Center, Infant Toddler Program Parent

Joya Child & Family Development

Reducing health and education inequities for infants and toddlers with developmental disabilities and delays. Early support services, including special education, physical, occupational, speech, and feeding therapy, medical evaluation, and service coordination.

Family Story:

With infectious energy, a beaming smile, and two blonde pigtails as spunky as her personality, Miss M. is a force to be reckoned with. Before she was even born, she was diagnosed with Trisomy 21, a common form of Down Syndrome, along with Transverse AV Canal, a heart condition that would require the tiny tot to undergo open heart surgery at just 7 months old. With a prenatal diagnosis, M’s parents proactively pursued early intervention care with Joya to ensure she could have access to the critical services required for her health and development. When M came home from the NICU at just a few days old, she immediately started receiving personalized occupational, speech, and physical therapies through Joya. Now thriving at the age of 2, M has overcome more obstacles than some face in their lifetime - but you’d never know it from her exuberant demeanor. “Our little M has always been a happy, joyous, and sweet child,” said her mom. “Her smile, loving nature, and enthusiasm for life spark joy in all those around her.” After two years of virtual and in-home care with Joya, M can now communicate through various signs. “Joya has been such a big part of M’s life and our family for 2+ years now,” explained her mom. “Our daughter is doing fantastic, and it is all due to the early intervention services we have received from Joya. Our in-home therapy day and now group days are our favorite days of the week!”- Joya Family

Kindering Center, Bellevue, WA

Providing pediatric therapies, special education, family supports, and more for children birth to 11 years old with cognitive, sensory, and physical disabilities, and with delays and complex medical needs.

Family Story:

Due to preeclampsia, Amber experienced a complicated birth. Soon after her son Avery was born, he was whisked off to the NICU, where he would spend the next 2 weeks of his life. Amber’s husband, Aaron, took over finger-feeding Avery for those first few days while Amber recovered in the maternity ward. It soon became clear Avery suffered from dysphagia and torticollis, which made feeding especially difficult. Thankfully, Seattle Children’s referred him to Kindering. Avery’s Kindering journey began at just 3 months old and continues through today, more than 3 years on. His progress has been astounding, Avery started off on a very limited diet – and today he can drink from an open cup unassisted and enjoys a wide range of foods! The family also participated in Infant Mental Health services, which focus on promoting healthy relationships between parents and children. Always caring and attentive, they nevertheless credit Infant Mental Health services with making them “better parents.” “I’m from a way different household than they’re teaching us, you know what I mean? . . . they helped me out to become a little more patient, to become a little more understanding… to be a lot more conscious of how he is in general… it helped me with, I guess, allowing me to be the dad I wanted to be from the beginning,” said Aaron. After graduating from feeding therapy at three years old, Avery has remained connected to Kindering with Steppingstones preschool class, where he now serves as a peer model! He has completely closed the developmental gap and no longer qualifies for special education. -Kindering Center staff

Skagit Valley Hospital Children's Therapy Center

A clinically based, family focused program providing one-on-one attention and small group physical, occupational and speech-language therapy to children with a full range of needs, including children with special needs. Pediatric rehabilitation services include family education and home programs.

Family Story:

"My son has been receiving therapy services at Skagit Valley Hospital Children’s Therapy Program for over a year. He began coming in to see a speech/language pathologist because his speech was hard to understand, probably only understanding 20% of what he said. After being evaluated, he also began receiving services through occupational therapy and physical therapy. The amount of benefits he has got from these therapies is amazing. He is now understood by most people at least 75% of the time. He is able to communicate and it has helped with his frustration levels and behaviors. He was able to learn to use the restroom and feed and dress himself with help from occupational therapy. He has learned to walk on the ball of his feet instead of his toes from physical therapy. There are many other things he learned in each therapy that are too many to list, but have changed his life for the better. I am so grateful that these services were available here. My son was given the opportunity to learn and catch up to milestones for his age." -Skagit Valley Hospital Children's Therapy Center parent

Skagit Preschool and Resource Center (SPARC)

Individualized services for families and their children with unique needs, from birth through age 5 in Skagit County.

Family Story:

" What kind of services do you have for a little 3-month-old potato? - She doesn't do a whole lot besides eat and sleep at this point." This was how Millie Zavala's mother began her conversation with Birth to Three's Vanessa Hagerty to talk about her daughter Millie. Millie was born 4 weeks Premature and expected to have health problems. Her mother's pregnancy didn't go well and was a long and confusing path. Millie was diagnosed in utero with 2 head conditions called Microcephaly and Lissencephaly. Both have different degrees of severity. The doctors were not optimistic when describing Millie's life outlook. They said if Millie survived the first few days, she would likely need a feeding tube and have developmental challenges.

Then came SPARC.

When she was only 3 months old, Millie met Vanessa for an evaluation meeting. Soon after, Millie started bimonthly Occupational Therapies. Every other week, Vanessa worked with Millie and her parents for an hour in their home. In addition to Birth to Three, the Parent 2 Parent group made a big difference for the family. " I honestly don't know how I would have managed this past year without her or the wonderful parents in our Parent 2 Parent group." says Millie's mother. At Millie's yearly evaluation she passed her tests and was described as "normal." Millie overcame the doctors' worst-case scenarios. Her mother said this could not have happened without the wonderful people at SPARC." - SPARC Parent

STEPS, Serving Whidbey Island, Anacortes, and San Juan Islands

Pediatric therapies, special education, family supports, for children birth to age 3 with developmental delays and complex medical needs.

Family Story:

"R" was born at 29 weeks following a complicated pregnancy. She weighed 3.2 pounds and remained in the NICU for 2-months for respiratory and feeding issues. When Steps first met R and her family, she presented with immature muscle tone and head control, mild to moderate stridor, chronic congestion, frequent respiratory illnesses, and feeding challenges. The Steps Feeding Therapist worked with R on various feeding techniques. These activities would help for a short time and then she would be “panicky” and pull away and refuse feeds. R started doing so much better with the nectar thick formula and the congestion, coughs, and chokes while feeding decreased. However, R became ill again and was not able to pull the thickened liquids, so Mom went back to thin liquids. During Steps next visit, R was uncomfortable with feeding. It was clear to her feeding therapist that though her weight gain was “adequate” her swallowing had become even more concerning. The Steps feeding therapist reached out to her Primary Care Physician to recommend an urgent Videofluoroscopic Swallow Study and possible NG tube due to potential chronic micro aspiration. R was admitted to Seattle Children's Hospital and had her VFSS. The rest of her story is still to be determined as she is still at SCH."- STEPS Parent

Family Story:

Most days, Jonah Vogel racing across playgrounds and jumping in puddles with a happy-go-lucky grin taking up half his face. At just 4 years old, his infectious laughter has already won the hearts of countless people, and his mother Jenna couldn’t be prouder of how far he’s come. Jonah was born premature (at MultiCare Yakima Memorial Hospital) and weighed only 2 pounds, 13 ounces. Jonah had serious issues with feeding, and it took him 2 months in the NICU to put on the few pounds he needed before he could be released. “I felt so supported,” says Jenna. They helped set us up for success.” At 5 months he was referred to Memorial’s Children’s Village to start physical therapy. “The Children’s Village staff were so knowledgeable and compassionate,” says Jenna. When Jonah underwent his first surgery, his family were referred to the Parent-to-Parent support group. "A lot of the families whose children are patients there are part of this group and it became such a blessing to our family." - Children's Village MultiCare Yakima
