The Congo River is located along the equator In west-central Africa, 494km north of Brazzaville.

The Congo River has four sources these are Lake Tanganyika, Mweru, the East African rift and the Chambeshi river. The mouth of the Congo River is the Atlantic Ocean. It flows through nine countries in Africa. This includes most of the Republic of Congo, Central Africa Republic, Eastern Zambia, northern Angola and parts of Cameroon and Tanzania.

It is 1.25 million cubic feet or more than 13 Olympic sized swimming pools in size and runs for 4,70km. The Congo River then ends at the Atlantic Ocean where the mouth is located. It has 14 Tributaries, Inkisi, Nzadi, Nsele, Bombo, Kasai, Fimi, Kwango, Sankuru, Likouala, Sangha, Ubangi, Giri, Uele, Mbomou.

The Congo river flows through the Equatorial Rainforest. In these areas trees reach heights of 130 to 160 feet tall and many plant species cover the river banks. There is also large areas of woodland, grassland, mountains and bamboo thickets. Some of the trees consist of red cedar, oak, walnut, mahogany and variouse palms. They all grow in different area of the Congo River and supply wood to different communities and ecosystems. Orchids, lilies, lobelias and gladioli flowers are some of the flowers found along with shrubs plants of euphorbia and landolphia families. Some large mamals such as lions, elephants, bufflo, zebra, leopard, cheetah, gorilla, chimpanzee, wild boar, giraffe and rhinoceros are found in variouse areas of the Congo River. Monkeys, rabbits, hyenas and squirrles are also very common. In the river there are many types of fish, crocodiles and hippopotamuses. Snakes such as pythons and tree cobras are are the larger reptiles while lizards and chameleons make up the smaller reptiles. There are many types of birds, insects and other animals and plants.

The Congo River is 4,700 km long and is used for trading, trasportation, food, water and recreation. People have lived along the Congo river for 50,000 years and is now home to 75million people and 150 different ethnic groups. Many of the communnities along the congo river use its banks for farming and as a source of food.
