History

"After a fire in1899, McShane and Company made a new headquarters after it was lost in the fire. The company's rebuilt the section of the flume that was burnt in the fire and resumed cutting and shipping of the ties. In 1909, the Big Horn Timber Company purchased the McShane and Company business, however by 1913 the ties started to be shipped by rail and flume fell out of business."

A flume is a man made channel of water, That is controlled by gravity making the water flow downward. These are used to transport logs or other heavy objects down the mountains.

Recreational

There are many things to do in Tongue River Canyon. First most people come to the canyon for the views and to explore the Tongue River Caves. Also there is a lot of fishing done in the canyon, where the hikers fish in the Tongue river which runs down the canyon. Mountain biking is another popular attraction to the canyon, with a 9.4 mile trail bikers can ride down.

Location/Length

The Tongue River flows over 265 miles, Running through Montana and Wyoming. The river starts on the Eastern side of the Bighorns and flows to the Yellow Stone River.

Types of fish

There are many different species of fish in the river. The most common is the rainbow trout. Other species include, Brown Trout, Yellow Perch, Large Mouth bass, and crappie.

Wildlife in Tongue River Canyon

Tongue River Canyon makes a perfect habitat for many animals, Including Mule Deer, Elk, Fish, Bear, White Tail Deer and many different species of birds.

We built this so we could have a 3d representation of the Tongue River Canyon using a 3d printed topographic map sitting on a laser engraved map of the area with a pine backboard and frame.
