Mathew Ugwuanyi 's Portfolio

A collection of my GIS skills, journey and development.

Welcome!

My name is Mathew Chidera Ugwuanyi, a geospatial enthusiast. As a geospatial scientist, I possess extensive technical proficiency in GIS software such as ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and Quantum GIS, alongside remote sensing tools like ERDAS IMAGINE and TerrSat. My programming skills in HTML and CSS have enabled me to develop web-based GIS applications. I am adept at data analysis and visualization, having conducted advanced analyses using ArcGIS Pro. I am a licensed drone pilot with a Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate and numerous GIS online professional courses. Currently, I work as a GIS Technician for Highlands County, Florida.

Education

MS Geography

I earned a Master's degree in Geography and a GIS graduate certificate from the prominent University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2024, with a summa cum laude grade. During the two years of studies I gained relevant advanced geospatial and research skills.

BS Geography

For my undergraduate studies, I earned a bachelor's degree in Geography at the prestigious University of Nigeria, Nsukka in 2015. Where I graduated as one of the top 5 best students in the Department of Geography in 2019.

Research

MS Thesis

During my Master's in Geography at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, I undertook a research on examining lung cancer mortality and the risk factors in Wisconsin counites. Lung cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in the United States, with significant variation in mortality rates across different states and communities. In Wisconsin, understanding the geographic distribution of lung cancer mortality and its risk factors is critical for targeted interventions and resource allocation. This study investigates the spatial variations in lung cancer mortality rates in Wisconsin, USA, through analyzing county-level data from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and National Cancer Institute’s Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER).

BS Research

In my undergraduates studies at the University of Nigeria Nsukka, my thesis focused on identifying the key drivers of biodiversity loss. Biodiversity, the variety of life on Earth, is essential for ecosystem stability, human well-being, and the health of our planet. This study is crucial in developing strategies to mitigate these impacts and preserve biodiversity for future generations.

GIS Projects / Analysis

In other to showcase my skills, I have engaged in a number of projects, some of this projects are listed below.

1

Kernel Density Analysis of Lung Cancer Screening Sites (LCSS).

This analysis shows areas with high and low concentration of LCSS.

2

Sebring and Avon Park, Highland County, Florida Direction and Distance of Urban Expansion

This involves analyzing patterns of urban sprawl, identifying key growth corridors, and measuring the extent of urban spread from central points. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for urban planning, infrastructure development, and sustainable city management.

3

Network Analysis (Service Area) of Lung cancer screening sites in Wisconsin.

This analysis depicts the time it takes people to get to the nearest (LCSS).

4

Fire Station Travel Time (Minutes)

This map shows the travel time it takes for Fire truck to get to it's surrounding environments.

5

Crime Analysis Buffer using ArcPy

This project shows a buffer analysis of police station in relation to crime. You can click on the link below for full video.

Conferences

I have also attend several seminar, Geography and GIS conferences which offers a unique opportunity for professionals, researchers, and students in the field to come together, share knowledge, network, and explore the latest advancements in GIS technology and applications. These conferences are pivotal for anyone involved in GIS, whether for academic purposes, professional development, or practical applications in various industries. I have had the opportunity to attend the American Association of Geographers in 2023 and 2024 which where in Denver, Colorado and Honolulu, Hawaii.

GIS Contents (Videos)

With my ever blazing passion for GIS, I also started a YouTube channel where I create GIS related content. So, whether you're a student, a professional, or just a geospatial enthusiast, my channel is dedicated to providing you with the knowledge, tools, and inspiration you need to excel in the dynamic field of geospatial technology.
