For any outdoor enthusiasts looking for a one-of-kind experience in the Metro-East, this lesser-known recreation area in southern St. Clair County, IL is worth your while! Comprising 2,000 acres of natural surroundings and varying topography, Peabody-River King State Fish & Wildlife Area is sure to evoke a sense of place and a connection to nature.

With more than 20 deep-water ponds and lakes, the site features plenty of fishing opportunities suited for all skill levels, including a designated youth fishing lake, Mink Lake, for children between the ages of 2-15. Peabody-River King also boasts 1,000 huntable acres and boating and hiking opportunities. Visitors need not travel far for accommodations like dining and shopping; the site is located just outside the City of New Athens, IL.

Entrance to Peabody-River King State Fish & Wildlife Area

Peabody-River King State Fish & Wildlife Area is located in southern St. Clair County about a half-mile east of New Athens, IL via Old Highway 13 and Darmstadt Road. The site is owned by the  Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR)  and operated by the Kaskaskia River State Fish and Wildlife Area.

About Peabody-River King State Fish & Wildlife Area

  • The Peabody-River King State & Fish Wildlife Area abuts the Kaskaskia River along its northern boundary and encompasses approximately 2,000 acres of lakes, ponds, and native prairie, grassland, and wetland landscapes.
  • The site was donated to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources by the Peabody Coal Company in 1994. In fact, the area's numerous lakes and ponds that exist today are the remnants of Peabody Coal Co.'s surface-mining operations that date back to the 1950's.
