The Danger Of Microplastics
BY:
Waters that are contaminated with microplastics
What is the issue?
The issue is that our Canadian waters are being contaminated by microplastics. For those who don't know what microplastics are, they are tiny plastics (less than 5 mm in length). The aquatic life of the sea is consuming these plastics because they look like food. It's very visible that the aquatic life has consumed the plastics because you can see it threw their stomachs. For example, in fish, you will be able to see the small circular microplastic in their bellies.

What causes the issue?
Some of the causes of microplastics is water runoffs, storms, winds. All of this is caused by pollution, if we didn't pollute they're would'nt be any microplastics in the water. When we pollute the garbage or microplastics to be specific go into the water. When we eat fish that have microplastics in them, the microplastic goes into our body too. The plastic ends up going to our fat and it stays there.

What are the consequences?
There are many consequences to microplastic in waters. One being that our aquatic life is dying from thinking that their full but all they have eaten is microplastics. We are also affected when it comes to the concequences. If we consume fish with microplastic in them, the microplastic also goes into our bodies. It goes into our fat and stays there which can make complications to our health. The aquatic life can have delaying growth and oxidative damage if they don't die from it.

What are the soloutions?
Some soloutions to microplastic waste are to stop buying products that could contain microplastic. In my opinon there is always another option to everything you don't HAVE TO buy the option with microplastic. Since we all use plastic contyainers it's hard not to buy the plastic conatiners but you should stop microwaving in plastic because it melts the plastic and creates microplastic. We can support people raising money to clean oceans and give what we can or voklunteer and help them do it.
