Kasitsna Bay Laboratory

Kasitsna Bay laboratory is located on the remote south side of Kachemak Bay.

Kachemak Bay is a "Natural Laboratory" that includes all estuarine and coastal habitats found in the Gulf of Alaska.

The laboratory is owned by NOAA’s  National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS)  and operated in partnership by NCCOS and the  College   of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences  at the  University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF).  

The lab has a suite of facilities and research infrastructure including a flowing seawater system.

Seawater labs enable varied research and education activities.

The facility provides dry lab space with classrooms, a walk-in temperature control room and assorted labs and equipment.

The large tidal range exposes nearshore systems daily allowing exploration for research, education and recreation.

Kachemak Bay's deeper waters and pelagic system are easily accessible from the laboratory. 

The Laboratory is home to UAF’s cold-water scientific diving program. On site are showers, lockers, gear washing and storing space, a compressor room and dive tanks.

Onsite are a 32 person bunkhouse and a 16 person dormitory with kitchens, laundry, lounges and wireless internet.

The laboratory is accessible year round with onsite personnel maintaining the campus.

Located on the waterfront is a pier and floating dock to provide access to boats that include a 26’ whaler and a 32' Munson. 

The diverse habitats found in Kachemak Bay make the Kasitsna Bay Laboratory an excellent place to do research and educate students.
