Mobile musical lives: An institutional map

Exploring the employment and education of migrant musicians

Use the map below to explore a range of institutions with which the musicians investigated by the Music, Migration, and Mobility project were associated throughout their lives. These might include schools and universities at which individuals were educated or taught, theatres and opera houses at which they played or conducted, or other institutions within which they were employed in some capacity.

This map is intended as a companion to the ' Featured Musicians ' section of the  Music, Migration, and Mobility online resource . As such, it does not contain detailed information about the association of each individual with a particular institution. Instead, the purpose of this map is to illustrate the wide-ranging networks of musical employment, education, and more that were traversed by the musicians investigated by our project. It is not an exhaustive database, either in terms of migrants referenced, nor in terms of the institutions concerned. Nonetheless, it offers a broad picture of the kinds of organisations with which migrants and refugees from Nazism in the 1930s tended to associate. All of the individuals included within this map were resident for at least some time in Britain after escaping the continent. The list of individuals referred to is based on the ' Featured Musicians ' section of the Music, Migration, and Mobility online resource, whilst the institutional information is derived from this same source, or from the  database of persecuted musicians  produced by the University of Hamburg. If you would like to learn more about a particular musician, follow the links included to navigate to their page on the Hamburg database* or, alternatively, visit their page on the ' Featured Musicians ' section of our online resource, where you will find more detailed information as well as a series of featured links for each musician.

To explore the map, simply click and drag using your mouse, and use the in-panel controls to zoom in and out. Click on markers of interest in order to open a dialogue box that will contain an address and a list of musicians associated with that particular institution.

*Please note that the Hamburg database pages are presented in German, though they can easily be translated using your internet browser.
