Connect Salmon Arm: Project Overview

Active transportation helps promote healthy, well-connected communities. The City of Salmon Arm wants to set a clear path for the future to ensure people of all ages and abilities can safely enjoy walking, cycling and rolling around our community.

The City of Salmon Arm has received a grant from the province’s Active Transportation Grant Program to develop an Active Transportation Network Plan (ATNP). Through collaboration with the community, the ATNP will establish a collective vision for active transportation in Salmon Arm and develop an implementation strategy that is uniquely suited to the City’s topography, demographics and current and future needs.

Urban Systems, Ltd. was the successful proponent to deliver this plan. Over the next few months, you will hear and see the project team in our community looking for feedback to help shape Connect Salmon Arm.

What is Active Transportation?

Active transportation is any human-powered mode of transportation such as walking, cycling, skateboarding or using a wheelchair. Other new and emerging transportation modes such as e-scooters and e-bikes can also fit in this category and may use the same trails and pathways.

Why is Active Transportation Important?

Health: Create more physically active communities which promotes psychological well-being

Safety: Dedicated walking, cycling and rolling space reduces the risk of injury, which makes people more comfortable to use active transportation modes

Economic: Neighbourhoods and destinations that are inviting and accessible can attract more visitors, who will in turn be patrons of local services and amenities.

Environmental: More people walking and cycling can help lower emissions while also reducing air pollution and motor vehicle congestion.

Societal:  Active transportation encourages social interaction, which helps to build trust, respect, understanding and a sense of co-operation amongst all community members.
