SCSC Petition Priorities Map

2024 - 2025 Cycle

Scroll to the bottom for an interactive map that will allow you to determine whether your proposed location is within a priority area.

Petition Priority Area Defined

The SCSC's petition “Priority Area” is a location more than five miles from any operational charter school authorized to serve all or some of the same grade band(s) as the petitioner’s proposed school, calculated as the most direct route measured in a straight line.

Georgia Charter Schools

The map displays all Georgia charter schools for the 2024-2025 school year. Dots represent locally approved charter schools, and triangles represent state charter schools. Each symbol is color-coded by grade levels served. Both state and local charters have a five-mile buffer circle encompassing them. The area outside of the buffer circles represents a "priority area."

To be included, a charter school must enroll students in at least one grade within the relevant grade band.

Charter Schools By Grade Band

Select one of the options below, then zoom into your area of interest.

Metro Atlanta Charter Schools

The Atlanta area has a high volume of charter schools serving students in grades K-5. However, as this illustration shows, there may still be a need for more high school charter school choice in the Atlanta area.

The SCSC's strategic plan includes two relevant growth objectives:

  • Objective 1: Increase charter school choice in communities with few or no options.
  • Objective 2: Expand high-quality middle and high charter school choice

Petitioners still need to assess community needs themselves and cannot rely solely on the information provided in these maps.

School Performance

Click on the buttons below to see Georgia schools' performance on  CCPRI Content Mastery  in the 2022-2023 school year by grade band. Higher scores, represented by green dots, are better.

Regions with low-performing schools could benefit from a charter option. Petitioners still need to assess community needs themselves and cannot rely solely on the information provided in these maps.

Student Age Population

This map shows the population density of individuals under the age of 18 throughout Georgia. The data comes from the 2020 Census and is viewed by census tract.

Petitioners still need to assess community needs themselves and cannot rely solely on the information provided in these maps.

Interactive Map

Use the interactive map below to explore the areas of interest to you. Instructions on how to select and unselect layers are below the map. A description of each layer can be found within the slideshow below the instructions.

ADDRESS SEARCH

The search feature allows you to enter a specific address to see if it falls in a priority area. Click the magnifying glass symbol on the right side of the map and a box will appear. Type the address of any location and the map will zoom to that location. If the address is five miles or more from a charter school it is in a priority area. Five miles is represented by the larger buffer circle around each charter school for the relevant grades served (light blue, light purple, light teal).

MAP LAYERS

The map has 12 layers. A map layer is a collection of geographic data. To select and view different layers:

Step 1.

STEP 1: The legend, located on the left side of the map, should already be viewable. However, if it is not, click the legend icon in the bottom left corner of the map. The legend contains each map layer. The map opens with all layers selected.

Step. 2

STEP 2: To view only certain layers, expand each dropdown and click the elements you want displayed on the map. When an element is highlighted in blue, it means it is being displayed. As a reminder, the map opens with all elements selected; thus, you will need to unselect the items you do not wish to be displayed.

The image to the right indicates that all elementary charter schools will be displayed on the map.

  • Triangles represent state charter schools (SC)
  • Dots represent locally-approved charter schools (Y)
  • The other two dots (N) and (others) are not displayed on the map.

Click through the slides below for a description of each layer.

Description of Map Layers

To view additional details about the elements in each layer, the user must first ensure the layer of interest is selected in the layer menu. If the layer of interest is under another layer, it may prevent the user from being able to select an element in that layer. As such, unselect any other layers to ensure the layer of interest is the top layer. Then click on the element of interest on the map. A pop-up box will appear with available, relevant information. The description of each layer outlines the available information for each layer element. Click through the slides for information on each layer. A description of the Map Tools is on the last slide.

Locations of Operational Charter Schools for 2024-2025

  • Elementary School Charters,
  • Middle School Charters, and
  • High School Charters

On each of these layers, a small dot represents a locally-approved charter school and a triangle represents a state charter school in Georgia serving students within the respective grade band for the current school year. Elementary covers grades K-5 and is colored light blue, middle school is 6-8 and is colored light teal and high school is 9-12 and is colored light purple.

A charter school needs to enroll students in at least one grade within the relevant grade band to be included. For example, a school that serves students in grades K-8 will be included in both the elementary and middle school grade band layers. Similarly, a school that serves students in grades 5-6 only will be included in both the elementary and middle school grade band layers.

The name of the school should appear when you click on a dot or triangle. The following information is available for each element within the layer: School system name, school name, school address, grades served, charter status- local charter (Y) state charter (SC), ContentMastery_2023 (2023 CCRPI Content Mastery Score), student FTE (enrollment count) from March 2024, and a few other indictors used for mapping purposes.

SCSC FY25 Priority Areas

  • Elementary Charters 5 mile radius,
  • Middle School Charters 5 mile radius, and
  • High School Charters 5 mile radius.

On each of these layers, the center point of each circle represents a charter school serving students within each respective grade band. Each circle has a radius of five miles (10 miles in diameter). The SCSC’s petition priority is for new schools to be located more than five miles away from any other charter school. No additional information for individual elements is provided on these layers.

CCRPI Content Mastery Scores of Georgia Schools

  • High School - Content Mastery Scores,
  • Middle School - Content Mastery Scores, and
  • Elementary - Content Mastery Scores

Each layer represents the 2022 - 2023 school year CCRPI Content Mastery scores for all schools in the respective grade band. Each dot represents a school and is color-coded based on performance, with red representing the lowest score and dark green representing the highest score. Variations of orange, yellow, and light green fall in between. The scale is viewable by clicking the dropdown for the relevant grade band - content mastery in the legend. The picture on this slide illustrates the map displaying all middle schools color-coded by 2022 -2023 CCRPI Content Mastery scores.

More information on CCRPI Content Mastery Scores can be found on the Georgia Dept. of Education's Website;  click here .

Student Aged Population

The layer titled "Total Pop Under Age 18 By Census Tract" illustrates the number of individuals that are under the age of 18 as reported in the 2020 US Census. The data is allocated by census tract. Dark blue represents a high density of individuals under the age of 18. Lighter shades of blue indicate a smaller population of school-aged individuals.
