Opportunities in Shawnee County

Now that we’ve “sprung forward” and adjusted our clocks, it’s beginning to feel like Spring has arrived! That means our Parks & Recreation employees are in full gear preparing for the busy summer months ahead. Baseball and softball seasons have begun and once again we are hiring seasonal staff for most of our summer programs. Camp Counselors, Lifeguards, Concessions, Maintenance,  and Mini-Train Drivers are a few examples of our seasonal openings with Parks & Recreation. The opportunities require a wide range of skills, but some are perfect for retirees or students on their summer break. If you know of anyone that might be looking for a summer job, consider sending them to Parks & Recreation. More information about our openings is available  here.   Lastly, May is National Bike Month which is another opportunity to get out and enjoy our amazing trail system! Commissioner Mays

FEATURED DEPARTMENT - Shawnee County Register of Deeds

The First Territorial Assembly established the Shawnee County Recorders Office in 1855, for the recording of deeds, mortgages, conveyances, commissions and bonds. It was later to become the Register of Deeds Office in 1858. Since that time the Kansas Statutes have provided for the duty of the Register of Deeds for each county to include having the custody of and solely keep and preserve all the books, records, deeds, maps and papers deposited or kept in the office.

Today the duly elected Register of Deeds is responsible for the preservation of those same records along with the electronic images of those records that are being recorded today. Technological advancements have been rapid and sweeping in the past couple of years and total electronic recordings are on the horizon. No matter what form those records take the Register of Deeds will be the office in which preservation is paramount. A public records office with retrieval of records for the asking, come in and see history and current technology at work in Shawnee County!
