Navigating Hempstead:

Enhancing Transit Connectivity in Hempstead New York

Background

Hempstead grapples with challenges that affect its accessibility and connectivity. The frequency of car ownership in the community introduces complexity to travel patterns, and existing policies may not fully align with proposed transit enhancements. The village's density, economic characteristics, and demographic composition make it a focal point for transportation planning that addresses the unique needs of its residents. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for crafting equitable and inclusive transit strategies that contribute to the overall well-being of the community.

Distribution of Population

Number of households gives a better visual of population density, but it still reflects similar data to population. The southern tract has the highest number of households and population, but still experience transit disadvantages.

Population Buffer

There are 5 Long Island Railroad train stations in proximity to the village. Still Residents are not in walking proximity (half mile), with the southern and northwestern tracts still experiencing a lack of bus connectivity.

Populations within a quarter mile

We created a quarter mile buffer to understand walking proximity to light use bus transport, with dense majority of stops in the downtown area.

Number of Households

This data allows for a comprehensive analysis of how densely populated an area is based on the distribution of households, and supports the population data.

100% Below Poverty Line

There are a large amount of individuals living in poverty within the village. Understanding if the Northern and Southern tract are affected by this, can reflect the urgency of innovation.

200% Below Poverty Line

Based on poverty data, both tracts experience income disadvantages. The people who lack public transportation connectivity also live below the poverty line.

Zero Car Ownership

Car ownership can reflect a history of transportation disadvantages within a community. Its clear that individuals who lack transportation have vehicles, and individuals in the Northern tract who are transit disadvantaged, do not own a vehicle compounding their struggles.

One Car Ownership

Majority of the community owns a vehicle, but the Southern tract that experiences the most poverty and the highest number of households, reflects a high number a vehicle ownership.

Two Car Ownership

The data continues to reflect the areas with limited transportation, are more likely to own more than one vehicle.

Populations who have experiences disadavantages.

The Justice40 initiative reflects a commitment to direct funds to disadvantaged communities. If households experience more than three disadvantages, they qualify for Justice40 intervention. The data reflect the the northern and southern tracts experience a very high amount of the population exceeding five disadvantages.

Challenges and Limitations

•Potential hurdles in implementation due to policy could impact the effectiveness of the proposed interventions

•Deeply ingrained reliance on private vehicles influenced by factors like convenience and flexibility

•Current 30 mph speed limits raise questions about the effectiveness and safety of proposed transit interventions

•Historical bus stop placement, dating back over 20 years, may not accurately reflect current transit needs

•Lack of transit options, especially during off-peak hours, affecting those with irregular work schedules
