KINNICKINNIC RIVER & JACKSON PARK PROJECT

MMSD is partnering with Milwaukee County Parks and others to make improvements along the Kinnickinnic River and within Jackson Park.

In early February 2020 MMSD, Milwaukee County Parks, and others hosted two public meetings for residents to provide input on the Kinnickinnic River & Jackson Park project.

There is still time to give us feedback which will build on prior input that has informed the Kinnickinnic River restoration to date.

The Kinnickinnic River flows through Jackson Park. Currently, a significant portion of the river is in concrete-lined channels or enclosed in culverts. To help reduce the risk of flooding to more than 660 homes, the concrete channel lining and enclosed culverts will be removed and replaced with a natural stream design to store more floodwaters during heavy rains.

Because of this, elements of Jackson Park will be re-envisioned to better support recreation and the community! Some improvements will include increasing the size of the park, removing contaminated sediments from the lagoon, improving trails, and updating sports courts. Your feedback will build on prior input that has informed the Kinnickinnic River restoration to date.

SITE PLAN ALTERNATIVE A, ALTERNATIVE B, AND HYBRID

Based on previous community input and recommendations from Milwaukee County Parks, three alternatives were created.

CROSS-SECTIONS

A cross-section shows a sideways view of the landscape which helps to visualize how the park will be utilized for flood storage during heavy rains. These cross-sections show where water would rise during a 2-year and a 100-year storm. These two examples would have a 50% and 1% chance of happening in any given year, respectively. The river levels rise and fall quickly during storm events which means flood waters would recede from these areas within a matter of hours after these major storm events pass through.

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK!
