Subsistence Agriculture

Subsistence agriculture is farming to produce enough crops to feed a small population, ranging from a family to a village. In subsistence agriculture, everything that is grown is eaten.

Shifting Cultivation

Shifting cultivation (also called slash and burn) is a type of subsistence agriculture based on rotation. Farmers cut and burn down forest sections to plant and harvest crops, and then move to an adjacent section and repeat the cycle. Farmers usually wait several years before returning to a burned section. The burning before planting is used to clear trees and enrich the soil with nutrients.

Pastoral Nomadism

Pastoral nomadism is a form of pastoralism where migrants move in a seasonal migratory pattern. The pastoral nomads depend on their livestock for food and resources, so they travel around seeking fresh pasture and water for animals such as goats, camels, and sheep. Pastoral nomadism is found in dry arid places where rain is unreliable and scarce.

Mediterranean Agriculture

Mediterranean agriculture is a type of specialized agriculture that produces figs, grapes, olives, and citrus (such as oranges and lemons). These crops all require a year- round warm climate, as well as lots of summer sunshine.

Ranching

Ranching is the raising and breeding of grazing livestock such as sheep and cattle. The livestock is held on ranches which are large areas of land with grass for grazing. Ranching is prevalent in the grasslands of Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and the U.S.

Commercial Gardening

Also called Truck Gardening or Fruit Gardening, Commercial gardening is the predominant type of agriculture in the southeast United States, but it is also found in many more developed Countries. Vegetables and fruits are grown on small plots of land and most produce is sold to large processing companies, but some are sold to individual customers.

Aquaculture

Aquaculture is a form of farming that involves cultivating aquatic organisms in varied underwater conditions. These aquatic organisms include fish, shrimp, oysters, mollusks, algae, and other aquatic plants. Aquaculture is most heavily practiced in South Asia countries.

Rice Production is a type of plantation agriculture. Rice Production requires a hot and humid climate as well as ample rainfall. Rice is grown mainly in south Asian countries such as China, Vietnam, India, and Bangladesh where rice is a very important food source.

Corn production is a type of grain farming which is a type of special agricultural activity where farmers only grow one crop. Corn thrives in areas with a warm climate and moderate rainfall. The U.S produces over 70% of the corn that goes on the world market.

Wheat Production

Wheat Production is another type of grain farming. Wheat grows in a relatively warm climate with lots of sunshine. Wheat is harvested with a columbine which separates the stalk from the grain. The largest producers of wheat in the world include China, India, Russia, The U.S, and Canada.
