Water Chronicles with the Philly Green Ambassadors
The Philly Green Ambassador Corps have been collecting water quality and observational data of the Cobbs Creek watershed
Overview
Welcome to our story map created by the Philly Green Ambassadors Corps (PGA Corps). The PGA Corps was established by the Overbrook Environmental Education Center two years ago as a climate and conservation focused workforce development program. Our 2023-24 pilot, supported through the Delaware River Climate Corps (DRCC) provides participants with education and training in environmental and climate justice; marine debris interventions; domestic toxin reductions, safety, and interpersonal skill development. Our partners included the Philadelphia Water Department, Water Center at Penn, Villanova University, and American Rivers.
Over the course of 12 transformative weeks, our community engagement corps embarked on a mission to champion environmental well-being, focusing on air, water, and land quality in the places where we live, work, and play. Based at the heart of our initiative, the Overbrook Environmental Education Center was our homebase, guiding our exploration into the realms of water quality, marine debris, data collection, analysis, and the intricacies of local and state water policy. This journey, fueled by community science and applied initiatives, was a collaborative endeavor aimed at not only understanding but actively contributing to the health of our local ecosystems.

The Role of Policy
In Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, the process of making laws related to water policy involves several steps. Elected representatives, like senators and representatives, discuss and propose bills concerning water management, quality, and conservation. These proposals go through committees where experts and stakeholders review them. If approved, the bills move to the full legislative body for debate and voting. Successful bills are then sent to the governor for approval. This entire process aims to create effective policies that address water-related issues and ensure the well-being of Pennsylvania's water resources and communities.
Pennsylvania Law Making in Harrisburg
State Representative Morgan Cephas (D) and State Senator Vincent J. Hughes (D)
State Representative Morgan Cephas (D) and State Senator Vincent Hughes (D) play crucial roles in shaping water policy in Pennsylvania. Representative Cephas, serving in the House of Representatives, brings her expertise and influence to the discussion, advocating for measures that address water quality, infrastructure, and equitable access to clean water in her legislative efforts. Similarly, Senator Vincent Hughes, a key figure in the Senate, contributes to crafting comprehensive water policies, drawing on his experience to champion initiatives that safeguard water resources and support communities across the state.
The Clean Water Act is an important law made in 1972 that helps keep the water clean. It gives government agencies the power to make rules and make sure they are followed to control pollution in water. In Philadelphia, where having clean water is extremely important for people and nature, the Clean Water Act makes sure that rivers like the Delaware and Schuylkill River (and their tributaries like Cobbs Creek) stay clean. This law guides efforts to prevent pollution, control it, and fix any problems, making sure the water stays good for the health and well-being of everyone.
