Northeast Glendale Bypass
Advancing transportation improvements for Glendale in Hardin County, KY
Project History
As part of the 2023 Glendale Mobility Study , the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) studied mobility needs near the community of Glendale in south central Hardin County. Improvement concepts were developed to facilitate future traffic flows, preserve historic Glendale, minimize impacts, and consider needs of all users. Study area needs are driven by future traffic accessing the BOSK plants, so traffic forecasts were a critical component of this study. Four distinct Build concepts were considered, some with multiple alignment options. Each was shared with local officials, stakeholders, and the public to gather community perspectives.
A Northeast Glendale Bypass was the highest priority from the planning study, intended to route traffic to/from the north along KY 1136 (New Glendale Road) to KY 222 and the BOSK plants without traveling through the KY 222/KY 1136 intersection. Two alignment options (see map) were recommended to advance to preliminary design.

The Project
Representative Alternative Alignments
With completion of the study, the project began preliminary engineering design work in 2024. KYTC contracted with the engineering firm Qk4 to perform the next phase of creating a northeast connector. Fieldworkers have initiated surveys in the area, collecting necessary data for design of the road and assessment of associated environmental impacts. This includes land surveying and geophysical surveying, along with geotechnical and environmental data collection. This information has informed preliminary engineering design alternatives.
All alternatives would construct a new two-lane route northeast of town between Mud Splash Road and KY 1136 and include a 10-foot-wide shared-use path on the southern side. Alternative 1, which utilizes a curb and gutter section, would also include a sidewalk along the north. Each alternative would include a series of roundabouts to calm traffic and provide safe connections to the local network and businesses. Representative alignments are shown here, click the links below to review more detailed preliminary plans of each.
Public Meeting
An open-house public information meeting was held Tuesday, July 30, 2024 in the Old East Hardin Middle School (129 College Street, Glendale, KY, 40162) gymnasium from 6:00-8:00 PM. There was no formal presentation. The display boards of the alternatives presented can be viewed by clicking the alternative buttons above this section. Individuals had the opportunity to review displays, ask questions, and discuss the project alternatives with KYTC and consultant engineers and staff.
Written and oral comments from this meeting will become a part of the official record for the potential project. Once compiled, the meeting record will be made available for review and copying only after an Open Records Request has been received and approved. All Open Records Requests must be submitted to the Office of Legal Services, Transportation Cabinet Office Building, 200 Mero Street, Frankfort, KY 40622 or by emailing KYTC.OpenRecords@ky.gov.
What's Next?
The project will advance through the design and environmental processes, anticipated to be complete by the end of this year. The right-of-way and utility phases would be expected to begin in early 2025. A future construction date has not been determined at this time. Check back for more project updates.
