ArcGIS GeoBIM for AEC Teams

Connecting Projects in Context

The Story So Far...

Every Project Starts with Existing Conditions

Projects need to take the existing conditions into account — whether those are natural conditions such as wetlands or flood zones, or the built environment such as roads or underground utility networks.

Since 2017, Esri and Autodesk have partnered to ensure that designers, engineers and construction professionals have live connections to ArcGIS within their design and planning tools, such as Autodesk InfraWorks and Civil 3D, with the ability to publish changes back to ArcGIS.

This integration allowed teams to access up-to-date GIS data, leading to better informed and more accurate designs and construction.

This was great. However, things are about to get even better.

Introducing ArcGIS GeoBIM

ArcGIS GeoBIM delivers an innovative, easy-to-use web-based experience for project teams to explore and collaborate on BIM projects and issues using data from multiple systems in a geospatial context.

Introducing ArcGIS GeoBIM (narration available)

Why ArcGIS GeoBIM?

ArcGIS GeoBIM gives engineers the power to integrate GIS and BIM processes, to provide seamless access to live project data held in its native format, on its native platform.

  • Put your projects on the map
  • Improve efficiency for teams by connecting projects and data with location
  • Organize projects without reorganizing data
  • Save time and money by minimizing data conversions
  • Communicate up-to-date project information easily and securely

Getting Started

Connect to ArcGIS GeoBIM

Use your Esri credentials to access to ArcGIS GeoBIM, and create a GeoBIM project.

Create a GeoBIM Project Account

Create a project account and authorize it with the Autodesk Cloud.

Link Your Engineering Documents and Issues

Use the GeoBIM Tools page to automatically search your specified Autodesk project for engineering documents, project models and issues based on project coordinate system and project address.

Create Link Rules or Link to Individual Features

For project data that may not be spatially referenced, use the Links page to create links that map a file or model to individual GIS features, or create a rule which maps a value held in a GIS feature attribute table to a BIM URL.

Create a GeoBIM App

Use the GeoBIM authoring tool to create an app with data and tools that are tailored to the needs of a specific team or set of stakeholders.

Using ArcGIS GeoBIM

Review Your Documents

Once you have linked your project data, it will be visible in the link panel of the app. Documents and Issues will be shown in the table.

Search for or select features to see documents associated with them, and a simple click will open the document in the viewer panel

Use the viewer to explore drawings, models and sheet sets.

Identify Issues Within a Project

GeoBIM enables team members to identify and flag design issues directly from the app.

These issues are fed to the Autodesk Construction Cloud or BIM 360, and from there, they can be assigned to a responsible party for resolution.

Create an Issues Dashboard

Create an issues app in order to monitor progress and pinpoint potential problems.

GeoBIM automatically creates a dashboard of linked issues, and this dashboard can be edited within ArcGIS Online.

Resolve Your Project Issues

Once an issue has been resolved and updated within an Autodesk project, the re-synced information is fed back to the GeoBIM dashboard.

This means that team members have access to up-to-date data in order to make more timely and better informed project decisions.

Licensing

GeoBIM requires licenses for ArcGIS and Autodesk.

To consume GeoBIM apps, you simply need any type of ArcGIS user, along with the GeoBIM extension.

To create, share and configure apps, you will need a Creator or GIS professional user type, along with the GeoBIM extension.

What's Next?

AEC teams face a challenge to create smarter, more sustainable infrastructure and cities. The time consuming and piecemeal solutions used so far need to make way for a more streamlined and connected workflow.

With  ArcGIS GeoBIM , it's now possible to bring together GIS data and BIM project details to break down silos, monitor progress and resolve issues more quickly, whether it's for a single project, or a portfolio spanning the world.

Projects and dashboards can be easily tailored to the needs of different stakeholders, making sure that teams have access to the relevant data within a secure and easy-to-use web app.
