Profile of Cisterns on St. Croix, VI for an Affected Area

This presentation provides a geographic profile of cisterns in communities for an affected area identified by a Federal Court.

The roof for homes on St. Croix is a critical component of the residential water collection system (Photo on left: Roof of residence with cistern). Whatever settles on the roof finds its way into the cistern when rain falls and takes water into the guttering that is connected to a downspout that takes the water to the collection cistern (Photo on right: Cistern under construction).

The Census subdistrict (Minor Civil District) represents a geographic area used by the U.S. Census for the collection, presentation, and analysis of census statistics. The following subdistricts were identified as the "affected area": Southcentral, Northcentral, Northwest, Southwest and Frederiksted. According to the 2010 Census, a total population of 28,478 lives in the affected area. The affected area is approximately: 50.2 SQ. MILE.

Within the census subdistrict there is a smaller statical unit called estate. The boundary of the estates coincide with the local government recording of real property. There are 115 estates in the affected area. Within the affected area there are approximately a total of 13,018 housing units (Census 2010). Of these housing units 5,811 (44.6%) only source of water is a cistern. There is another 3,040 (23.3%) housing units with a cistern and a connection to public water system as its water source.
