Hawksbill Sea Turtle - Story Map

The Hawksbill Sea Turtle or the Eretmochelys Imbricata is an endangered species that is found in tropical water around the world.

I found data on this species from the Ocean Biodiversity Information System (OBIS)

There were 48 occurrence records of the Hawksbill sea turtle in the Caribbean from 2008 and 2010.

To clean the data, I put the spreadsheet in Excel and deleted all unnecessary variables from the table, except for the species name, longitude, and latitude.

After cleaning, I had to validate the data by finding where it was originally from.

The original data was provided by the World Wildlife Fund, an organization that specializes in wilderness preservation and the reduction of human impact on the environment.


I used the program Maxent to predict how certain environmental variables affect the Hawksbill Sea Turtle.

This is a map of the data. The warm colors show areas with better predicted conditions. White dots show the presence locations used for training, while violet dots show test locations.

The variables I used to get these results were salinity and temperature.


In conclusion, I found a lot of data for the Hawksbill Sea Turtle. I learned what occurrence data is, I learned how to clean and validate data, and what Maxent is used for. Overall, I got a better understanding of the species but also gained data analysis skills and an appreciation for the tools that add to the conservation of these animals.
