Wausau to Merrill Trail

Learn, Contribute, and Create a Plan for the Wausau to Merrill Trail.

Project Overview

The Lincoln County Forestry, Land and Parks Department and the Marathon County Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department have teamed up with MSA Professional Services to collaborate on a recreation trail master planning project seeking to connect the cities of Wausau and Merrill. This process is the beginning of a multi-year effort to determine an appropriate route and engage with community members throughout the corridor.

This proposed recreation trail corridor dates back to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) 2002 Wisconsin State Trails Network Plan. The corridor is identified as ‘Segment 18’ and is a portion of a longer segment connecting the City of Tomahawk to the City of Wisconsin Dells. You can review the original 2002 plan and updated 2023 plan by visiting  https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/fl/PropertyPlanning/TrailNetworkPlan.

Public Engagement

Three different public engagement strategies will be utilized during this project to gather community input. These strategies include an online survey (click the button below to participate), two in-person public input meetings (PIM), and an interactive mapping activity that can be found below. Comments and data gathered from both the online survey and in-person meetings will be summarized and uploaded to this StoryMap as we move through the master planning process.

Public Input Meeting #1: Merrill

On Thursday, June 20, 2024, an in-person public input meeting will be held in Merrill at the Lincoln County Service Center in Board Room 255/257 from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM.

Public Input Meeting #2: Wausau

On Thursday, June 27, 2024, an in-person public input meeting will be held in Wausau at Eastgate Hall (in Marathon Park) from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM.
