Oklahoma Wind Farm Areas

Reviewing the Locations of Oklahoma Wind Farms

Oklahoma ranks No. 9 in the nation for installed wind power, according to the American Wind Energy Association. Oklahoma has 3,134 megawatts of “installed wind capacity,”. All this energy, which is equal to about 2.3 million homes, is generated by 3,736 wind turbines operating in Oklahoma. This map shows all the wind farm areas in Oklahoma, along with all the information about each turbine, where it is located, and how much turbines are in each farm.

There are many wind farms that vary in sizes, from the nine-turbine Buffalo Bear wind farm near Buffalo,Okla., to the 162-turbine Balko Wind Project in the Panhandle's Beaver County. There are many turbines that exist on their own, outside of wind farm projects, such as the 100-kilowatt turbine at the High Plains Technology Center, which is used to train students in wind energy careers.

There are also many wind farms that can be located in two counties, such as the Kingfisher Wind farm, which has almost half of its turbines in Canadian County and Kingfisher County. Many counties in Oklahoma have a wind farm they share with another county.

Wind energy generated about 6.3 percent of the nations electricity supply in 2017, according to the U.S Department of Energy estimates, which also show the average capacity of newly installed turbines is increasing, as is turbine size and blade length, while technology costs and wind power prices are dropping.

Most of Oklahoma's wind turbines are located in the western part of the state, from Texas County to Osage County, all the way to Murray County.

The largest wind farm in Oklahoma, Blue Canyon Wind Farm. It consists of four phases, a 45- turbine farm, 55- turbine farm, 66-turbine farm, and 84-turbine farm. It has an installed wind power of 423.45 megawatts. Its generation equals to the consumption of more than 94,000 Oklahoma homes.

Every single turbine generates electricity. As the wind, blows the blades on the turbine, the blades turn an electric generator. Wind makes about 35.38% of electric energy in Oklahoma, which powers about 2.3 million homes in Oklahoma each year. Wind energy is converted into energy to also pump water or grind grain.
