18th-century British Travellers to the Orient

Visualizing the routes of Lady Mary Montagu and the Earl of Sandwich

Introductory Remarks

These maps were created to visualize the routes of selected British travellers to the Orient in the 18th century as a part of the research project "Unveiling Orientalism: Gender and Ambiguity in c18 British Discourse on Travel" carried out at the University of Duisburg-Essen. The research project is a sub-project of the interdisciplinary research group "Ambiguity and Distinction: Historical and Cultural Dynamics" (FOR 2600). More information on the project as well as the research group can be found  here .

Please note that this scrollytelling website is a work in progress. Further maps and texts will be added in the future.
