Journey Through The Middle Corridor

Nagoya, Japan

The Port of Nagoya is the largest and busiest port in Japan, handling about 10% of the Japan’s international trade. In 2023, it shipped  2.5 million TEU  (Twenty-foot equivalent unit) of cargo. It is a major hub for automotive exports. The cargo transit time by sea from Nagoya to Qingdao  takes  about 2 days and 18 hours.

Qingdao, China

The Port of Qingdao is the  fifth  most busiest port in the world, facilitating Yellow Sea trade. In the first nine months of 2024, it handled  23.16 million TEU  – an 8% increase from 2023. It takes about  2.5 days  by rail to ship cargo from Qingdao to Xi’an.

Xi'an, China

The Xi’an terminal is considered by many as a dry port, handling 276,000 tons of railway freight in 2024. It is projected that the hub will increase transit to  456,000  tons. The cargo transit time by rail from Xi’an to Altynkol takes about  5 days .

Altynkol, Kazakhstan

Altynkol facilitates land-trade between China and Kazakhstan. In 2024, it transported  32 million tons  of rail freight. However, it has  congestion problems  of both empty and loaded freight, including at the Chinese border. It takes about  3 days  to ship cargo by rail from Altynkol to Aktau.

Aktau, Kazakhstan

The Port of Aktau plays a key role in Caspian maritime trade. The port plans to create a container hub to increase the capacity of cargo flow along the middle corridor. In the first half of 2023, cargo flow reached  2.2 million tons . It takes  18-20 hours  to ship cargo from Aktau to Baku by sea.

Baku, Azerbaijan

The Port of Baku is a key hub for Middle Corridor multimodal trade through the Caspian Sea. It can annually handle 15 million tons of cargo and 100,000 TEU equivalent of contaniers. In 2024,  7.6 million tons  of cargo passed through the port. The cargo transit time by rail from Baku to Poti is about  4-5 days

Poti, Georgia

The Port of Poti facilitates Middle Corridor trade by linking the South Caucasus to the Black Sea and Europe. Currently, all of the port’s capacity is under use and there is an ongoing initiative to  expand  the port’s capacity. The port’s annual container volume is about  272,000 TEU  in the first half of 2024. It takes about  4 days  to ship cargo by sea from Poti to Ambarlı.

Ambarlı, Türkiye

The Port of Ambarlı handles  30%  of Türkiye’s total container volume. The port has received  7.5 million tons  of cargo from January to May in 2024.

Estimates show that it takes about 22-23 days for cargo from Nagoya to reach Ambarlı through the Middle Corridor.
