OLD CAMERON RUN TRAIL

CITY OF ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA

Thank you for your interest in the City of Alexandria’s Old Cameron Run Trail project. The purpose of this project is to design and construct a 1/2 mile shared-use path to provide a safe, accessible connection for people walking and biking between the Eisenhower East and Southwest Quadrant neighborhoods.

Scroll through this website to learn more about the project and provide your feedback.

PROJECT BACKGROUND AND TIMELINE

The City of Alexandria has a network of sidewalks, bicycle lanes, and off-street trails that allow residents and visitors to get around. The Old Cameron Run Trail (see the purple rectangle on this slide and the following slide for an enlargement) will help improve connections to neighborhoods, destinations, transit, and the regional trail system.

A feasibility study for the project was completed in 2015, and the project has been adopted in the City’s Transportation Master Plan and Eisenhower East Small Area Plan. In 2016, the City was awarded grant funding through the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to design and build the trail.

Design for the project is underway, and construction is expected to begin in 2025.

PROJECT LIMITS

The trail alignment extends from Hooff’s Run Drive to South Payne Street (shown on the map in red). An additional trail connection is expected to be designed and constructed as part of future private redevelopment (green). The City is planning to add sharrow roadway markings (blue) along Hooffs Run Drive and South Payne Street.

The Old Cameron Run Trail project will provide important connections for people to get around on foot, using a wheelchair, or by bicycle. Currently, few connections exist between the Eisenhower East and Southwest Quadrant neighborhoods. This project will improve access to local neighborhoods, businesses, the Metro system, the Lee Center, as well as other off-street trails and destinations.

TRAIL ALIGNMENT

The proposed trail measures 0.53 miles from beginning (at the corner of Hooff’s Run Drive and Limerick Street) to end (at South Payne Street). The trail can be broken up into four unique sections:

  • Along Truesdale Drive (pink), the proposed trail parallels the roadway and is separated with a curb.
  • Behind AlexRenew Soccer field (red), the proposed alignment represents a typical off-road shared-use path.
  • A prefabricated steel bridge (dark orange) spans over Hooff's Run.
  • Between the bridge and South Payne Street, the existing trail will be repaved (light orange).
  • At the corner of Hooffs Run Drive and Limerick Street, a future trail (green) will tie into the proposed Old Cameron Run Trail.
  • On Hooffs Run Drive and South Payne Street (blue), sharrow pavement markings will be added to the roadways to denote that the roadway must be shared with cyclists.

The white/black numbered circles (1-4) represent the locations of the before ("existing") and after ("proposed") renderings shown on slides 6 through 13.

EXISTING CONDITIONS

This project is located within the natural resource protection area (RPA) and FEMA floodplain of both Old Cameron Run and Hooffs Run. Additionally, these stream banks include steep slopes. The City and State each establish a set of requirements to protect these environmental resources. For example, when within the RPA, new trail pavement must be a permeable or porous material that allows stormwater to infiltrate through the pavement into the native soil.

To further protect these valuable natural resources, the design team is conducting a natural resource inventory of wetlands, trees and stream banks. The findings from the on-the-ground field work helps to reveal the best way to integrate the new trail within the site while minimizing impact. Furthermore, the team is also researching historical archives for any potential archaeological resources.

  • Shrub and tree planting on the embankment on the south side of AlexRenew soccer field

TRAIL LOCATION #2 (PROPOSED)

BEHIND (SOUTH OF) THE ALEXRENEW SOCCER FIELD LOOKING WEST

  • Permeable pavement trail
  • A wall might be required to complete the design
  • Stormwater swale collects runoff from hillslope
  • Pedestrian lighting
  • Replacement tree/shrub planting as needed
