About SR 162
State Route (SR) 162 is an important north-south highway for the South Prairie residents and surrounding east Pierce County. The SR 162 corridor serves businesses and residents from South Prairie to Orting and Sumner. Commuters use SR 162 to reach the Sumner Sound Transit station. It is also heavily used by freight and recreational users heading to nearby state and national parks.
SR 162 is located between SR 410 in Sumner and SR 165 near Buckley
SR 162 Corridor Congestion Study
In 2016 and 2017, we looked at ways to improve traffic flow on SR 162 from Orting to Sumner. With your input, we were able to identify near-term, mid-term, and long-term improvements to the corridor. The interchange of SR 162 at SR 410 was also included in this study.

SR 162 / 128th Roundabout
As part of a Pierce County Developer project, WSDOT is reviewing plans for a new roundabout to be built at the SR 162 and 128th Street East intersection. This is part of a project that would provide a second connection from Orting and SR 162 to the Tehaleh development. Although this is a developer project, it is currently going through WSDOT review due to WSDOT requiring mitigation for the developer's impacts of the Tehaleh development.
SR 162 / Military Road Roundabout
Next priority project to be funded.
Sound Transit Study- Sounder to McMillin
This project would establish a commuter rail service from McMillin (near Orting) to the Puyallup Sounder station using the existing track owned by Meeker Southern Railroad.
The project area is located between the Puyallup Sounder Station and McMillin in Pierce County
Final decisions on project elements (e.g., alignment, number of stations, station locations, and number of parking stalls) will be determined after completion of planning, project-level environmental review, and preliminary engineering during which additional opportunities for public participation will be provided.
