Risk Of Wild Fires

Awareness of wildfires in San Bernardino County

WHAT ARE WILD FIRES???

Wild Fires are fires caused by human activity or natural phenomena, Such as Lighting. Wild Fires can happen anywhere, when there's a source of fuel, oxygen, and Ignition, The Fire triangle is the triangle of life for a fire. What sets a wildfire and regular fire apart is wildfires are not controllable rather, they chaotic and random

THE THREE TYPES OF WILD FIRES

THREE TYPES OF FIRES

Ground Fires

Ground fires are mainly plant decay on the duff layer. The duff layer is compacted plant decay. Ground fires can take a while to be dectedcted since they produce very to little smoke. As well with no flame rather a glowing combustion

Surface Fires

A Surface fire is a fire that burns loose needles or any thing nearby. Surface fires are mainly on the floor like ground fires. The diffrence is they have combustion flames.

Crown Fires

Crown fires are fires that burn the forest canopy as fuel. They have higher flames since they are burning actual trees. There are 2 types of crown fires, Passive crown and Active crown. The passive crown will burn one tree at a time. At the same time, Active crowns produce a solid wall of fire. Active crowns spread faster and are considered running crown fires

USA CURRENT WILD FIRES

The map demonstrates the current fires in California, highlighting an abundance of wildfires, especially in the Southern California region. This reinforces the importance of being aware of wildfires and taking steps to prevent them.

THE DANGERS OF WILD FIRES

There are many dangers and destructive effects associated with wildfires. The most immediate danger is the risk of being burned. Naturally, people try to stay far from the fire to avoid burns. However, the primary concern is respiratory tract irritation, which can lead to respiratory failure. Additionally, wildfires can cause significant damage to the eyes.

THE EFFECTS OF WILD FIRES

The after-effects of a wildfire include extensive destruction of infrastructure and the environment. Wildfires contribute to global warming by releasing large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Additionally, wildfires result in poor air quality due to the presence of harmful smoke and particulates. Water sources may also become contaminated, further compounding the environmental damage and health risks associated with these fires.

Analysis

As you can see, San Bernardino County is consistently affected by wildfire hazards, making it highly susceptible to frequent outbreaks. The county is also home to a diverse population, including many minorities. This diversity means that the aftereffects of wildfires can disproportionately impact these communities. It is essential to address these risks with targeted strategies that consider the specific needs of minority populations to ensure effective support and recovery efforts.

10 Conservation Tips

Water Conservation

1. Let It Mellow

By Letting urine to sit in the toilet for another flush it allows to reduce the amount of flushes, as well the water. On average a toilet flushes 1.6 Gallons. Lets say you flush once per twice use. You will save 1.6 Gallons.

2. Wash with Full Loads

When Washing with full loads. You are being more efficient with water. As your not using more since its one load not multiple loads few clothes, with the same amount of water for each load.

3. Turf Removal

By Removing your turf. Yo save lots of water as grass takes up lots of water to keep green. By removing your turf and replacing with drought tolerant plants. You will save more money and have a new exotic garden. In socal there's a rebate through Socal Smart offering for 2$ per sq Ft.

4. Convert to high efficient water Utilities

By converting to high efficient machines you would be saving water as the machine uses less water to perform the duty. It would also be efficient on electricity saving you money with electricity.

5. Reduce time while water ussage

By reducing time your reducing water as water flows out faucets through a rate. Which is your flow rate gallons per min. By reducing time its portpotinate by reducing the amount of water used

Eletrical Conservation

1. Air Dry Cloths

By airdrying cloths you save eletricty by reducing the need to use dryer. Its also gentler with cloths. Meaning cloths lifespan will be longer compared to using a dryer. By Using an air dryer your carbon footprint becomes due to the reduce use of eletrcity

2. Washing Cloths in Cold water

By washing your cloths in cold water it will reduce eletriciy and maybe gas depending on your type of washer. Since there is no need to pour in eletrcity to heat up the water to wash the cloths

3. Switch to leds

Switching to LED bulbs conserves electricity because LEDs are highly energy-efficient, using up to 80% less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs. Unlike incandescent bulbs, which lose a lot of energy as heat, LEDs convert most of their energy into light, reducing overall electricity consumption. This efficiency means that you can light your home or office using significantly less power, leading to lower energy bills and a reduced environmental impact. Additionally, LEDs have a longer lifespan, which means fewer replacements and less waste.

4. Unplug Eletronics

Unplugging electronics when they're not in use conserves electricity by eliminating "phantom" or "standby" power consumption. Many electronic devices, such as chargers, televisions, and computers, continue to draw small amounts of power even when they are turned off or in standby mode. This continuous energy drain can add up over time, contributing to higher electricity bills. By unplugging these devices or using power strips to easily disconnect multiple devices at once, you can prevent unnecessary energy usage, reduce your overall electricity consumption, and lower your utility costs.

5. Open a window instead Of AC

Opening a window instead of using air conditioning conserves electricity by taking advantage of natural ventilation to cool your home. Air conditioners are energy-intensive appliances, requiring significant electricity to operate. By simply opening windows, especially during cooler parts of the day or when there's a breeze, you can reduce the need for artificial cooling. This method not only lowers your electricity consumption but also decreases your energy bills and reduces your carbon footprint, contributing to a more sustainable lifestyle.

What I have learned during my intership

During my internship, I have learned a great deal. From using new software such as ArcGIS to learning how to use spreadsheets—something I had never learned before—I have expanded my skill set significantly. I have also become acutely aware of the crucial need to conserve water and energy. Although we all know conservation is key, we often fail to consider the negative impacts that occur because we do not see them frequently. This experience has made it clear that we must remain vigilant about environmental justice.

Refelction

Throughout my internship, I realized that my lack of time management skills was a significant challenge. Despite this, I gained valuable insights into my local community, including understanding our water sources and learning how to audit electricity and water usage. One of the most useful skills I acquired was learning the flow rate equation, which will be particularly helpful for one of my future projects.
