Lesson Objectives

Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world. Despite the progress, many challenges remain. Therefore, this class aims to help you build up your background knowledge about LGBTQ, find out the challenges LGBTQ is facing, learn SDGs goal 5 and develop your viewpoint with solutions you can think of.

Before Class

What is gender? Defining Gender Identity

In this part, you will learn abundant terms related to LGBTQ+ so as to identify different groups of people. Also, you can learn the basic definition of gender identity and build up your background knowledge about LGBTQ+.

After having a better understanding about gender identity, you are encouraged to have an easy test to evaluate your comprehension of the topic.

During Class

Background and history of LGBTQ

LGBTQ has become a popular term nowadays. You may see this term with lots of gender issues! Yet, do you know what the five letters in LGBTQ stand for? I think most of us may not be that familiar with the meaning and history of LGBTQ! Let’s read the Jamboard and watch the clip below to find them out!

A. Terms related to Gender and LGBTQ This is a Jamboard about the terms related to LGBTQ! Please click on it and take a closer look at it!

B. History of LGBTQ This is a video about the history of LGBTQ. Please watch it carefully! We’ll do a worksheet after then! C. Review Worksheet Let’s do some review through the worksheet!

Challenges faced by LGBTQ

Since most people in the world are heterosexual and usually have the same gender identities as their biological sex, LGBTQs are viewed as the minor ones in society. Hence, many challenges are waiting for them! Let’s have some discussions about what challenges would they face! Besides, because most of us are teenagers, I would like to focus on LGBTQ teenagers. Following are some instructions for the activity we’ll do in this part!

1. Discussion Before watching the film, please think of some challenges that LGBTQ teenagers may face and put them on your Jamboard!

2. Video Watching After discussions, I think all of you have some ideas about the challenges to LGBTQ teenager. Let’s watch a clip about the challenges that LGBTQ students faced! Please watch the film carefully!

3. Jamboard exercise

After watching the clip, please go back to the second slide of Jamboard and put down other challenges you have learned from the film and share your reflection with your groupmates!

SDGs goal 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls

In this part, you will learn "SDGs goal 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls" in two short videos and an official article. Enjoy the videos and article and try to find out the issues this goal focus on.

After learning the goals from these two videos, you now understand what SDGs is, what challenges people are facing, and what goals people are pursuing. It's your turn to draw a mindmap of essential points from the videos!

Solutions of the challenges

In this part, you will learn some suggesting solutions of challenges LGBTQ+are facing from two articles. Try to come up with your viewpoints and think about other solutions could be implemented to slove these issues.

After reading the article, you are encouraged to share your ideas with others! Form a group and discuss the soultions of LGBTQ+ challenges with your group members.

After Class

What can you do to help the situation become better?

After learning the definitions, history, challenges, and SDGs about gender equality for LGBTQ, how much do you understand about the issues? Do you come up with some solutions to the challenges they are facing?
