Drainage and Wastewater Management Plan

Introduction

Welcome to our new Drainage and Wastewater Management Plan (DWMP) portal.

You can use this portal to view our plan, gain access to the data we’ve collected so far and check the progress of our work.

We want to create a mutually beneficial plan for everyone, so we welcome your support. Please feel free to share datasets from your organisation or let us know your ideas.

Use the tabs above or scroll through the pages to view the stages of our plan as well as our progress to date.

Scope and context

The maps below show our drainage and wastewater region and the catchments within it.

Initial catchment screening

The three maps below show the results of our RBCS 2019 assessment within the different boundaries outlined under scope and context.

Use the search bar or zoom button to explore and click on the areas you’d like to know more about. The map doesn't include individual street/property data, so the shading will disappear at a certain zoom level. Any unshaded regions on the map represent areas where we don’t have or don't own assets in the area.

Catchment risk analysis

Our Baseline Risk and Vulnerability Assessment (BRAVA)

Since September 2020, we've been discussing the results with our stakeholders through virtual workshops with representatives from the Local Authorities, Environment Agency and Catchment Partnerships.

Through BRAVA, we've modelled our region through several different lenses to better understand the areas of vulnerability now and in the future. The maps below highlight the different lenses/metrics we have used. These are in line with the national metrics used across the industry and the definitions for each of the metrics can be found on Ofwat or WaterUK’s website.

Use the search bar or zoom button to explore our region and click on the areas you’d like to know more about. NB. The map doesn’t include individual street/property data, so the shading will disappear at a certain zoom level. The colours on the map are explained in the key at the bottom left hand corner of each map.

Lagging metrics

There are three maps below which were created using our lagging metrics (internal flooding, pollutions and sewer collapses) – this means we used data from historic reported events and current performance data to give a view of 2020 status.

Use the left and right buttons on the map below to see the three maps.

Leading metrics

Within this section, we've included six further maps showing our Leading metrics (risk of sewer flooding (foul) in a 1 in 50 year storm, storm overflow performance and sewage treatment work compliance) – these were created using modelled data for 2020 and 2050 to give a future view of potential areas of risk.

For each of the maps below use the left and right buttons on the map to see the difference between the 2020 modelled data and the 2050 projection data.

Developing interventions

On the map below you can see the regions and the options that were progressed through the Optioneering process. These were discussed with our stakeholders in May 2020. The results of detailed investigations in to these options and their respective and costs and benefits for each region will be shared through Catchment Strategic Plans in the coming months.

Programme appraisal

Throughout the Programme Appraisal stage we carried out meetings with our partners and stakeholders to hear their thoughts and create a plan that meets the needs of everyone. Together we looked at the costs and benefits of the options to include in the final plan. We did this by seeking to identify the optimal combination that looks to deliver the best value for the customers and the environment.

The first iteration of our preferred plan balances our ambitions, our stakeholder and customer desires, our planning objectives and affordability. We have shown the plans as Radar Plots which can be found using the map below. The plan with the largest area under the radar best balances criteria.  The closer the line is to the outside of the graph, the better the outcome.

Our final plan

Our final plan is considered to provide the best value to customers as it meets our ambitious environmental and property flooding reduction targets, while providing high performance outcomes for environmental, natural capital and wellbeing. At every stage of the process we have incorporated feedback from our customers and stakeholders we have co-created our long-term investment plan that addresses our DWMP planning objectives and balances the needs of our customers and the environment.

The maps below illustrate the main outputs of the final plan.

Use the search bar or zoom button to explore and click on the areas you'd like to know more about. The map doesn't include individual street/property data, so the shading will disappear at a certain zoom level. Any unshaded regions on the map represent areas where we don't have or don't own assets in the area. Use the left and right buttons on the map below to see the five maps.

Catchment strategic plans

Since 2019, we have been working alongside our stakeholders to develop a long-term strategy for wastewater and drainage issues for the next 25 years. During this journey, we co-created 13 Catchment Strategic Plans which summarise the future challenges of each catchment and the associated long-term plans to help overcome these.
