Avenues Plus Project

A concept design proposals presented by Glasgow Avenues Plus Project

Avenues Programme

The Glasgow Avenues Plus Project are reshaping across the City Centre and some immediate adjacent areas. The remodelling of the city centre is to protect and prioritise space for improving connectivity, active travel, introducing green sustainable infrastructure and to improve the way public transport is accommodated.

Avenues Plus Locations

The four avenues plus location seen below, will focus on specific improvements which will include; Green/blue infrastructure (such as street trees, planting and rain gardens), enhanced and widened footways, segregated cycle lanes, reduced street clutter and improved lighting features.

South Portland Street

Welcome to the South Portland Street regeneration project, which has been made possible through the securing of Transport Scotland funding, via Sustrans “Places for Everyone” programme.

History of Street Design

South Portland Street was historically designed as part of the Laurieston and was Glasgow’s first residential area south of the Clyde. Best known for its broadest street and centre piece of ambitious Georgian development by the Laurie Brothers –Architect Peter Nicholson. The original bridge was replaced by the present suspension bridge in 1853.

Present Day Street Design

The present day regeneration of the Laurieston area will include a wide linear park, which relates to the original alignment of South Portland Street. This provides green links to the Clyde and provides strong connectivity for people to walk, cycle or wheeling.

South Portland Concept Plan

Concept Plan for South Portland Street

This interactive 360 VR model, provides a 3D visualisation of South Portland Street. At the heart of this project is an inclusive and accessible design, which includes low traffic area, walking and cycling routes which are surrounded by climate sustainable green spaces.

Project Elements

An Inclusive Design

The proposals provide safer crossings, with two controlled crossings (traffic lights), using tactile surfaces, drop down kerbs and creating resting seats (arm and back rests). This proposal will continue to evolve to ensure appropriate details suit the South Portland Street area.

A Sustainable Material Palette

Sustainability of the pavement material will consider source, durability and carbon footprint. The South Portland Steet proposal will try to reutilise traditional materials such as Scottish granite (whin setts and cubes) and kerbing Scottish whinstone. Reclaimed materials and new local materials will also be considered.

A design that Considers Trees Carefully

South Portland Streets existing trees are currently in poor condition, due to roots being constrained during planting. Unfortunately these trees will need to be replaced. The new proposal will carefully consider the location of trees to prevent future issues with underground services. Potential trees may include birch, lime and elm.

A Design that Manages Water Responsibly - Rain Gardens

Rain gardens can help reduce storm water, that is related to climate events such as flooding. The plants will provide a place to store water and the soil will help to slowly filtrate and release water. Other benefits are visual amenities and an increase in biodiversity.

Questionnaire

The story of South Portland Street concept proposals has so far been informed by the first public engagement process, stakeholder consultation and technical assessments and appraisals. To assist the continuing evolution and development of the design, your comments would be appreciated. The associated questionnaire can be filled in online.

Possible Traffic Managment

Avenues Plus project is exploring the possibility of both the advantage and support for measuring the volume of traffic. These options below look at possible changes to the flow of traffic. Careful consideration has been considered without impacting upon local access.

Existing Through Traffic Movements Utilsing South Portland Street

Though traffic from south (blue line). Coburg Street to Oxford Street to South Portland Street to Norfolk Street travelling eastwards.

Through Traffic from west (green line) Oxford Street to South Portland Street to Norfolk Street traveling eastwards.

Option A

Allow right turn from Coburg Street at Norfolk Street (Bridge Street Subway car park)

Option B

Reversing the dirction of Coburg Street and South Portland Street.

Option C

A combination of both A & B
