Poole Road Energy Centre

How ThamesWey is decarbonising Woking Town Centre

The story in short

ThamesWey has constructed a new corporate headquarters, which will enable us to manage all of our Woking operations from the same building, for the first time. However, it will be much more than just an office - the first threefloors will become our new Energy Centre.

The Energy Centre is the heart of a new, low-carbon heat and electricity network for Woking town centre. It will generate and supply heat and power to new developments in the west of the town centre, starting with Victoria Square.

It is part of a strategic effort to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions in Woking, in support of Woking Borough Council's 2050 'Strategy for a Sustainable Borough', and the Council's target of carbon neutrality by 2030.

What is a heat network and why create one?

A heat network is a distribution system of super-insulated pipework, which delivers heat to a buildings.

The heat is generated and pumped from an energy centre, which can use any technology to create heat.

Heat networks have a major role in a creating a carbon neutral future, recognised by the government's independent advisory group, the Committee on Climate Change (CCC):

Around 18% of heat must come from heat networks by 2050, if the UK is to meet its carbon targets cost-effectively" (CCC, 2015).

What does a heat network consist of?

The journey of Poole Road

The interactive timeline below lets you explore the progress to date, and what can be expected in the future.

Where the heat network is

This map below shows where our distribution pipes have been installed, in the first phase of the network.

Over time, the network will expand to serve more town centre buildings and the pipework can be extended to achieve this. See the story of the entire network, at the end of this page.

Advantages

Heat networks have a number of strengths:

The network up to now

The story so far has focussed on the new network and energy centre, but ThamesWey has supplied low-carbon heat, power and cooling to Woking town centre for 20 years.

See how the network has developed over this time, using the arrows on the map below.

In summary

Poole Road Energy Centre will supply generate and supply low carbon heating and power to Woking Town Centre, helping to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions and create a more sustainable borough for all.

This follows 20 years of successful low-carbon energy generation and supply in Woking town centre, from ThamesWey.
