Illinois Landfill Disposal Capacity Report
2019

Introduction
Pursuant to Section 4 of the Illinois Solid Waste Management Act, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA) has prepared this report reflecting the available disposal capacity of permitted landfills in Illinois and the estimated life expectancy of those landfills. This report identifies the cumulative remaining disposal capacity and landfill life expectancy for the State as a whole, for each of the seven Illinois EPA administrative regions of the State, and for each individual active permitted landfill. The data contained in this report is based upon information each permitted landfill is required to report to the Illinois EPA annually; specifically the volume of solid waste accepted by a landfill during the calendar year and the remaining disposal capacity of the landfill as of January 1 of the following year. For this report, the projected life expectancy of each landfill is determined by dividing the landfill's reported disposal capacity by the landfill’s average annual disposal rate for the last five years.
Statewide Disposal Capacity
During calendar year 2019, Illinois' 37 permitted landfills reported receiving a total of 63,433,903 cubic yards of solid waste. These landfills have a remaining combined available disposal capacity of 1,232,353,880 cubic yards. At the average disposal rate over the past five years, these landfills will have a cumulative life expectancy of approximately 24.5 years. However, cumulative landfill capacity and life expectancy may vary year-to-year based on a number of factors, including waste disposal rates, landfill expansion, and the construction of new landfills.

Capacity Data by Region
Statewide Disposal Capacity
The Illinois EPA divides the State into seven administrative regions. These regions have various numbers of landfills, disposal rates, landfill capacities, and landfill life expectancies. The table identifies this information on a regional basis.
Northwestern Illinois
Individual landfill data can be assessed by choosing Region 1 in the interactive Landfill Data Map (see link section at the top of this page).
The table reflects each landfill's reported capacity as of January 1, 2020, volume of waste disposed in 2019, five-year average of volume disposed, and projected life expectancy based on the current five-year average.
Chicago Metropolitan
Individual landfill data can be assessed by choosing Region 2 in the interactive Landfill Data Map (see link section at the top of this page).
The table reflects each landfill's reported capacity as of January 1, 2020, volume of waste disposed in 2019, five-year average of volume disposed, and projected life expectancy based on the current five-year average.
Peoria/Quad Cities
Individual landfill data can be assessed by choosing Region 3 in the interactive Landfill Data Map (see link section at the top of this page).
The table reflects each landfill's reported capacity as of January 1, 2020, volume of waste disposed in 2019, five-year average of volume disposed, and projected life expectancy based on the current five-year average.
Eco Hill
Eco Hill is a recently opened landfill. It's re-opening increased Region 3 landfill capacity by 28% and increased the Region's lifetime expectancy by more than 7 years.
East Central Illinois
Individual landfill data can be assessed by choosing Region 4 in the interactive Landfill Data Map (see link section at the top of this page).
The table reflects each landfill's reported capacity as of January 1, 2020, volume of waste disposed in 2019, five-year average of volume disposed, and projected life expectancy based on the current five-year average.
West Central Illinois
Individual landfill data can be assessed by choosing Region 5 in the interactive Landfill Data Map (see link section at the top of this page).
The table reflects each landfill's reported capacity as of January 1, 2020, volume of waste disposed in 2019, five-year average of volume disposed, and projected life expectancy based on the current five-year average.
St. Louis Metropolitan East
Individual landfill data can be assessed by choosing Region 6 in the interactive Landfill Data Map (see link section at the top of this page).
The table reflects each landfill's reported capacity as of January 1, 2020, volume of waste disposed in 2019, five-year average of volume disposed, and projected life expectancy based on the current five-year average.
Southern Illinois
Individual landfill data can be assessed by choosing Region 7 in the interactive Landfill Data Map (see link section at the top of this page).
The table reflects each landfill's reported capacity as of January 1, 2020, volume of waste disposed in 2019, five-year average of volume disposed, and projected life expectancy based on the current five-year average.
