Extending Environmental Health Services with GIS

Our Mission Statement

To contribute to a better everyday life through the implementation of environmental public health protection programs that prevent the transmission of disease and exposure to harmful levels of environmental contaminants.

GIS Tools for the Public

Environmental Health Services (EHS) performs inspections to prevent exposure to toxic substances, disease-causing agents, and unsanitary conditions.

EHS maintains a Geographic Information System (GIS) that enables the public and EHS staff to visualize and analyze permit locations tied to timely inspection results and other program data via targeted web maps and dashboards.

Retail Food Safety

Interested in “what goes on back there” in the kitchen of your favorite restaurant, behind the aisles of your local market, or just looking for a new place to try?  EatSafeSLO  provides the locations of permitted retail food facilities and links to health inspection results so you can explore the county's expanding inventory of retail food services. Our inspection team makes unannounced inspections to all actively permitted retail food facilities in our county.

Please visit  Food Safety Program  for permit and operation procedure information.

Beach Water Quality

Planning a trip to the beach this week? Whether you surf, swim, run through the waves, or just walk along the shores, check out  SurfSafeSLO  to view the beach water quality status for beach water testing sites from San Simeon down to Oceano.  We test for three types of indicator bacteria every week and post the sampling results along with historical sampling data and timely press releases.

We worked closely with our local stakeholders including SurfRider and Heal the Bay during the design and implementation of SurfSafeSLO.

Public Swimming Pools and Spa Pools

SwimSafeSLO  provides the locations of permitted public swimming pool and spa pool facilities and links to health inspection results. The purpose of this program is to protect human health by assuring that public swimming pools and spa pools are maintained in a safe and healthful condition.

Please visit  Recreational Health  for permit and operation procedure information.

Body Art Safety

InkSafeSLO  provides the locations of permitted body art facilities and links to health inspection results. Our inspection team makes unannounced inspections to all actively permitted body art facilities in our county.

Body art means body piercing, tattooing, branding, or application of permanent cosmetics. A body art facility is the specified building, section of a building, or vehicle in which a practitioner performs or demonstrates for the purpose of instruction, body art, including reception areas, the procedure area, and the decontamination and sterilization area. A body art facility does not include a facility that only pierces the ear with a disposable, single-use, pre-sterilized clasp and stud or solid needle that is applied using a mechanical device to force the needle or stud through the ear.

Permanent and Mobile Body Art facilities are required to be approved by Environmental Health Services prior to beginning construction or use. Please visit  Body Art Program  for permit and operation procedure information.

Water Well Drilling

EHS regulates and permits the construction, modification/repair, and destruction of water wells and monitoring wells. Please visit  Well Program  for all well-related program information.

DrillerView  is a map tool for well drillers that helps identify which administrative and groundwater boundary criteria apply to a proposed well construction site and provides drawing and measuring tools to create a digital plot plan, a component of the well permit application process.

One-Mile Water Well Search Tool  is an interactive map for the public to search for completed water well construction permit records within a one-mile search radius from a given location.

Water Well Construction Permit Lookup  is a data dashboard for the public to lookup water well permit data for which construction has not yet been completed or for water wells which have been recently constructed.
