Carlisle's population was 77,728 in the 2021 census.

Carlisle Castle

Calisle is a historic city. The first settlement was a roman fort built along Hardian's Wall. Known as The Boarder City, Carlisle was important in defending England from the Scottish. Carlisle Castle was built in 1122 to secure the boarder.

Carlisle's Rivers

Carlisle has three rivers the Rivers Eden, Caldew and Peterill. The rivers all drain from the mountains of the Lake District, the wettest place in England. The city suffered devestating floods in 2005 and 2015

Carlisle has fast train links to London (3hrs), Glasgow (1hr), Newcastle (1hr) and Manchester (2hrs). Carlisle is also on the M6 motorway

Employment in Carlisle is higher than the England average with 82% of people in employment (June 2020).

Carlisle has higher than average employment in skilled trades (e.g. plumbing) and manufacturing, 17% and 12% repectively.

Carlisle is home to a number of large employers including McVities Biscuits, Pirelli Tyres, Eddie Stobart and Northern Foods

Investigation Study Area

This map shows Lower level Super Output Areas (LSOAs). These are data areas used by the government and council to to let them compare different places. Each LSOA has an average population of 1500 people.

We will be comparing two LSOAs, an inner city area and a suburban area to see how quality of life differs between them.

The IMD is the official measure of deprivation in England. The IMD is used to compare relative levels of deprivation between different LSOAs. The IMD is contructed using 7 domains, or categories this map shows the overall result of all 7 domains combined together.

The IMD is split in to 10 levels called deciles. Decile 1 is the most deprived 10% of LSOAs in England. Decile 10 is he least deprived 10% of LSOAs.
