A man was shot and killed in Uptown on May 27, 2023. Police say they found Ryan Shamel Elliot in his car with a gunshot wound to the head. Upon investigation, CMPD pinpointed Joseph Crawford as the suspect.

On a busy April weekend in 2023, two people were shot and hospitalized.

New Year's Eve Mass Shooting

A block away from where crowds gathered for Uptown's NYE celebration, someone opened fire in Romare Bearden Park,  injuring 5 people .

Just before the clock struck midnight on Dec. 31, 2023, major police response drew attention away from the awaiting fireworks and towards Church Street, where crowds had just scattered. CMPD arrested 19-year-old Daevion Crawford, who faces multiple charges related to the shooting.

The victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Crawford was arrested minutes after the shooting, CMPD says.

The police report lists the 300 block of Church Street as the location of the shooting.

On Nov. 11, 2023,  two girls were shot  just across the street from Romare Bearden Park around 10 p.m.

CMPD said the suspect in the shooting was also a juvenile, and he used a " ghost gun " to commit the violent act.

The teenagers, age 15 and 17, suffered serious injuries.

As of Nov. 17, at least two teenage suspects were arrested.

The police report lists 410 S. Church Street as the location of the incident.

Nearly 50 people were arrested or cited after  chaos broke out  before a fireworks show on Independence Day in Uptown.

Crowds flocked to Romare Bearden Park for a chance to see the Truist Field fireworks show, one of the biggest fireworks shows in the southeast.

Four firearms were seized that night. Seventeen teenagers were arrested, the youngest of whom was 13.

While no one was reported as hurt, two CMPD officers had minor injuries.

CMPD believes the chaos was planned.

A man was shot and killed in Uptown on May 27, 2023. Police say they found Ryan Shamel Elliot in his car with a gunshot wound to the head. Upon investigation, CMPD pinpointed Joseph Crawford as the suspect.

When police went to arrest the man they believe is responsible for killing Elliot near Truist Field, they were met with shots towards them.

Police said Crawford shot a gun from a car when officers turned onto his home street, hitting a detective's car.

Crawford then led police on a chase through Gaston County, where he was first located.

On a busy April weekend in 2023,  two people were shot  and hospitalized.

The shooting happened right under the gazebo in the park. CMPD officers were patrolling the area already, as there was a Knights game about to begin and a music and arts festival happening in Uptown.

Police located their suspect, Kashif Simmons, within 3 minutes. Simmons faces several charges, including First Degree Murder.

The police report lists 300 S. Church St as the incident location.
