TCU Supply Chain Business Technology Camp Experience

Inaugural Technology Camp

This summer, select students from Cristo Rey Fort Worth College Prep got an inside look at global innovation at our inaugural TCU Supply Chain Business Technology Camp. This program was hosted by the   TCU Neeley Center for Supply Chain Innovation.

From company site visits to hands-on learning experiences on campus, students explored today’s business tech with experts from across industries. In addition to awarding certificates, the center announced a $10,000 scholarship opportunity for students applying to Texas Christian University and pursuing a business degree in Supply Chain Management.

“Seeing the students interact with different technologies and engage with supply chain executives on company site visits was extremely rewarding to the students and our Neeley faculty and staff. The Center for Supply Chain Innovation is so grateful for our industry partners who helped make this camp free for the Cristo Rey students while giving them first hand exposure to different supply chain opporutnities.”

Cristo Rey High School

Cristo Rey Fort Worth College Prep is a Catholic learning community that educates young people of limited economic means to become men and women of faith, purpose and service. Through a rigorous college preparatory curriculum, integrated with a relevant work study experience, students graduate ready to succeed in college and in life.

TCU has a deep history with Cristo Rey in creating an academic roadmap from high school to higher education, helping students envision and realize the opportunity of a four-year university education.  The TCU Business Technology Camp is a new channel for students to have in-person, on-campus experiences to further their ambitions for university and careers in business.

Campus Workshops

During the workshops, students were experiencing a different reality from their own. A couple of hands demos had campers learning how new technologies are aiding the supply chain industry and just how complex these components can be.

Raytheon Technologies VR Demo

Raytheon Technologies Corporation is an American multinational aerospace and defense conglomerate headquartered in Arlington, Virginia with an innovation center in Fort Worth. It is one of the largest aerospace, intelligence services providers, and defense manufacturers in the world.

The use of Virtual Reality (VR) devices helped students understand how technology can aid supply chain operations.  In this example, students learned about product and facility differences between facilities in a virtual environment.  This use case demonstrates how aerospace workers can leverage VR to increase process accuracy and gain efficiencies, while reducing costs related to travel, workplace errors and slow process times.

"We’re a technology company and we thought it would be a great opportunity to showcase a small portion of that technology and how our employees use it at work. While the students we got to talk with had the opportunity to try it and ask truly insightful questions fully showing their interest in the technology and how it is applied, we’re excited to see some of them use this as Raytheon Technologies employees in the future!" -David Boelens OSC Professional Development

The Hershey Company Candy Bar Game

The Hershey Company, commonly known as Hershey's, is an American multinational company and one of the largest chocolate manufacturers in the world with brands such as Kisses, Twizzlers, Heath, Reeses, Kit Kats and many others.

For the supply chain exercise, students had to research and assemble (digitally) all the components of the “chocolate bar” and how these materials are normally sourced – from dairy milk and cocoa bean to packaging and distribution.  In the process, they learned about the complexities and dependencies of these products to be in the right place at the right time to produce the highest quality of chocolate.

From Bean to Cup | A StoryMap

Starbucks Corporation is an American multinational chain of coffeehouses and roastery reserves headquartered in Seattle, Washington. It is the world's largest coffeehouse chain.  Starbucks sources coffee beans from more than 65 countries, operates 6 roasting plants in 3 countries (as of Feb’22) and supports more than 33,000 store locations.

For over a decade Starbucks has been committed to operating more sustainably from innovating with farmers directly to optimize land and water usage, reducing emissions from facilities, and protecting forests and biodiversity within their supply chain, among many other initiatives.  In this workshop, students accessed the Starbucks StoryMap, “From Bean to Cup: Starbucks, Supply Chain, and Sustainability” to visualize and follow where coffee is grown within Africa, the miles the raw materials must travel by truck and ship, and the overall flow of goods within the value chain – from bean to coffee grounds, to the grande latte.

TCU Scavenger Hunt

The camp included an active on-campus scavenger hunt with a goal of helping students understand how technology and data can be used to map and monitor resources as they move around a specific area.

In this instance, it featured teams of students traveling their own routes around campus to find seven known landmarks. Dunaway Associates used Esri technology, ArcGIS, to map the landmarks and track the routes of each team (shown in the final screen).

After the scavenger hunt, student teams were presented with the final outcomes of the different teams’ routes, times and steps taken.  Dunaway described how in the logistics industry, companies use the GIS technology to create and optimize routes for their fleets of vehicles.

Field Trips

The business technology campers to this point have seen and tested amazing new and emerging technologies. The next part of the camp was to give students a behind-the-scene view of how companies manage their own supply chain. They also visted companies who are using their own technology to improve the supply chain efficiencies of others. Students were able to participate in several onsite visits with Fort Worth area businesses to learn about the variety of career opportunities in the supply chain and logistics industries.  These field trips permitted students with hands-on experiences to technology and equipment and with exposure to business leaders providing advice to pursuing high value careers in the industry. Thank you

The inaugural TCU Business Supply Chain Technology Camp was a huge success, in large part to the participation of our partners.  Through the visits to and workshops with these companies, first-generation students had an unprecedented opportunity to experience real-world professional environments helping them to imagine their futures in innovative careers.   The TCU Center for Supply Chain Innovation in the Neeley School of Business celebrates these industry partners for their continued commitment to building the workforce of the future.  For future camps, we are excited to welcome new partners to grow the experience for the students and the awareness within TCU.
