Are Asian-Americans / Filipinos being represented enough?
Topic question: are Asian-Americans / Filipinos represented in elected offices to local government? What are the implications of this?
Topic question: are Asian-Americans / Filipinos represented in elected offices to local government? What are the implications of this?
To start off in the first article I read (https://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/first-asian-american-in-decades-elected-to-sd-council/2102080/) it talks about how San Diego’s District 6 has elected its first Asian American member to the city council in nearly half a century Chris Cate on Nov. 5, 2014. Aplications: the fact that any ethnicity or race gets elected in local government is an important step in the right direction. the U.S was based on the premise of “all men created equal” but the reality was that for many years and even today elected officials in local government and in state government, were predominately white males. as a community we should normalize the idea of all races/ethnicities/genders partaking any type of employment, especially in any form of government as they represent our district. the purpose of our whole nation, but specifically san diego because we live here, is to make sure no minority is marginalize.
Now on the topic on hate crimes Asians have been facing in the article I read ( https://www.kpbs.org/news/2021/mar/04/nationwide-rise-hate-incidents-against-asian-ameri/ ). In the article it talks about how in may of 2020 asians were experiencing hate crimes towards them. In the article it even states "In May 2020, Stephan’s office set up a hotline where people could call or make online reports of hate crimes and racist incidents. She said they received 110 reports to the hotline, and 10 were reports about incidents directed toward people of Asian descent". The fact that chris cate was the first elected asian american city council member elected in decades is telling maybe if we had more asian american leaders in our community hate crimes wouldn’t be striking as they are now. Maybe if more of an emphasis was put on equality we wouldn’t have so many problems with race. Basically expand upon the idea of representation
Lastly the article I found information on talks about how Asian-Americans are growing in political power. In the article ( https://www.nbcnews.com/news/asian-america/california-asian-americans-find-growing-political-power-n866611 ) it says " In 1980, there were at least 160 AAPI elected officials in various levels of government, including Congress, state legislatures, counties, cities and school boards, according to Pei-te Lien, a professor who specializes in Asian-American politics at the University of California, Santa Barbara. By the time Bonta was elected to the California State Assembly, there were at least 343. That number had grown to at least 463 by 2016." That paragraph alone shows how in 41 years Asians are slowing being involved more in government jobs around California. So a big idea is that california is a democratic state, meaning most people are registered as democrats, more liberals too. liberals are more progressive in their ideas with social issues and representation and things like that, so this could be why there are growing asian political power in California.
By looking at the states it shows that compared to other states in the U.S California, and Hawaii have more immigrated Asian-Americans there. The reason why Asians and Filipinos immigrated to California rather than other states is because people from Asia began migrating to California during the Gold Rush era. With the factors including the 1882 Chinese Exclusion act, the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, and the "alien ineligible for citizenship" status imposed on Asian immigrants into the 1950s and 1960s limited their numbers. In 1965, federal officials changed immigration policy to allow migration from Asia after many years of exclusion. So with this information I then believe that California and Hawaii would have more Asian-Americans in the local government.
Percentages of where Asian-Americans are more populated in U.S
Another Asian-American who is a Councilmember was Jason Pu. He was elected to the San Gabriel City Council in 2013 and re-elected in 2017. Some things he has done for Asian-Americans is he attended an Anti-Asian Hate rally. He also attended at the vigil in San Gabriel to pay tribute to the victims of the Atlanta spa shootings along with 400+ Asian-Americans.

All points on the map are different cities in California that are most populated with Asian-Americans
This map shows cities in California that have more Asian-Americans than other cities in California. So with this we can know Asian-Americans are most represented here
