Emo or Goth? A map tour of special effects

Update: see an accidental X-ray effect in the last map of Ukraine prompted by a Russian invasion.

Two map styles stolen from  John Nelson  as requested 😊 highlight the snow caps and the sunset lighting of some of my favorite mountainous areas: page through them in this map tour...

1

Banff

Southern Canadian Rocky Mountains from Banff to Saskatchewan Crossing, south end of Columbia Icefields. Note the misting to the SW that's absent to the NE as it's almost mile-high in So. Can. Rocky Mtn. Foothills

2

Jones Sound

Canadian Arctic Islands glaciated terrain at a grand scale. Grinnell Pen. at far left, where I spent the  summer that never was  of 1986.

3

Pyrénées

SW France south of Béarn with Col du Somport gateway to Spain at bottom left.

4

French Alps

From Grenoble to Turin, Geneva just off top left corner, map angled to fit in print map.

5

Arusha

NE Tanzania field of volcanos incl. giant Kilimanjaro and Ngorongoro craters.

6

Ukraine

Early 2022 invasion by Russia prompted a  Medium post  for which this is the banner picture. The X-ray effect is accidental: after creating an Emo version of the region, this resulted from autocorrection in MS Picture Manager intended to remove a haze effect!

Note the Danube delta in Moldova at lower left, and the Don-Dniepr basin the large swathe near the centre.

Make sure you click each picture to enlarge the view! Notice that the first images are actual map prints, some oriented, get these hi res prints here:  Banff ,  Jones S. ,  Pyrs ,  Alps  &  Tanzania .

The first images are made in  Ice Mountain hill shade  style, adding  misting  for effect.

Secondly,  Sunrise Hack  shows in fact sunsets lit from the West with dark valleys and mist.
