Public Art in Brookhaven, GA

Arts + culture are connectors – linking us with our neighbors, with the region, and the world.

About the Story Map

The City of Brookhaven Community Development Department in conjunction with the Arts & Culture Commission has worked to compile the locations of various public art around the City of Brookhaven as a resource for our residents and visitors alike to explore the various cultures and forms of artistic expression that live within the City.

This page has been created in satisfaction of work program item 4.9 of the Brookhaven Arts and Culture Master Plan,  Arts Brookhaven: A Vision for Culture and Creativity in our Community , adopted in 2020. The master plan, which serves as a roadmap to realizing the City’s arts and culture goals, was developed by the Brookhaven Arts Advisory Committee throughout a 2-year process that included robust community outreach and comment.

Our goal is to continue adding more art as we are made aware of it, or as it is created within the City. Please use this  survey  to add locations of existing art that has not been included, or to identify potential locations for art in the future.

Art Crosswalks

The City of Brookhaven’s Arts and Culture Commission identified art crosswalks as one of the top desires of residents in terms of new art in the city with a primary emphasis on art crosswalks in several neighborhoods. The City of Brookhaven has been working to establish a creative crosswalk program to install safe, cost-efficient, and low-maintenance artistic crosswalks by using a combination of colors, textures, and patterns to improve pedestrian safety. The first art crosswalk program was installed at the Windsor-Osborne roundabout located in Lynwood Park to showcase the unique character, highlight the history of the Lynwood Park area, and serve as a gateway to the neighborhood.

Dashboard @ International Festival

Dashboard, We Love Buford Highway, The Brookhaven Arts and Culture Commission, and Explore Brookhaven announce Boundless Dreams – a dynamic display of outdoor artworks uniting dreamers from different walks of life, unveiling alongside the inaugural Brookhaven International Festival. Produced and curated by Dashboard and featuring local Metro-Atlanta artists Gavin Bernard and Patricia Hernandez, the exhibition connects the artist’s boundless dreams and artistic expressions to showcase unity at the center stage and inspire a shared vision of harmony, understanding, and collective strength.

Inspired by the festival’s mission to weave together the cultures and communities represented by Buford Highway, the installations will playfully utilize color, light, and form to transform infrastructure in Brookhaven, including walkways, lighting, and fencing, into beacons for storytelling and celebration.

Boundless Dreams is free and open to the public and will remain on view day and night from October 21, 2023 through January 19, 2024, allowing passersby to experience the artworks in new ways as daylight changes through the seasons.

Palimpsest, 2023

Gavin Bernard,  @gavincbernard

Palimpsest uses color-blocking and light to create vignettes as abstract interpretations of the diversity that exists in Brookhaven and surrounding neighborhoods. Photos taken from the neighborhoods become the inspiration and blueprints for each vignette, reflecting a collage of colors on the pavement below.

Palimpsest is interested in how we intersect the old with the new, how change occurs in neighborhoods over time, and the imperative to honor and preserve the history and legacy of our neighborhoods in the feverish march towards new development.

Guianos Quetzalcoatl, 2023

Guianos Quetzalcoatl is a profound reflection of my journey, one marked by discovering and embracing my identity as a Meztiza deeply connected to my Mayan ancestry. At the heart of this artwork is Quetzalcoatl, the god of life, presented in an indigenous human form. It symbolizes the fusion of cultures and traditions that have shaped our history. Our ancestors were subjected to colonization and, in the process, redefined their faith and traditions. These adaptations have become integral to our culture, influencing our social interactions and way of life today.

In the image, you can observe the vibrant folklore, the children representing our future, and the resilience of holding onto one's roots. Brookhaven, intricately linked with Buford Highway, holds a special place in my background. It contains fragments of every immigrant who has made this area their home, each contributing a piece of their heritage. This amalgamation is reflected in the richness of our food, the diversity of our markets, and the strength of our community. Together, we integrate and become an essential part of Atlanta.
