The John Muir Way
A story map highlighting multi-use access information
This story map provides a step-by-step guide to potential multi-use access barriers along the 134-mile John Muir Way from Helensburgh to Dunbar.
About this guide
The notes below were originally produced by the British Horse Society (BHS) Scotland to identify the location and details of features that may restrict access to the waymarked route. Whilst the focus of these notes is on horse riders, the information on obstructions is equally relevant to a wide range of other users including cyclists, walkers with pushchairs, and people with mobility issues.
Photos have been included to help you assess for yourself whether a feature may present an obstruction to you. Alternative routes and suggestions are included where possible, but do not constitute a recommendation. Please note that while the route managers will endeavour to update this information when changes are made, neither the accuracy of this information nor accessibility for all users is guaranteed.
How to use the map
Scroll through the notes below and you will find details of potential barriers. The map will automatically zoom to the section described and show their numbered locations. The route is presented west to east along the JMW walking route. JMW cycle braids are generally not included but are noted as alternatives in some cases.
