Developing the Vision for STEP at West Burton
Context & Site
Regional Scale
The West Burton site is in North Nottinghamshire, within Bassetlaw District Council. The county boundary runs along the river Trent, placing the site on the border with Lincolnshire, and very close to South Yorkshire.
The site is located inside the Midlands Engine area and is part of this partnership for prosperity. It will also be inside the future East Midlands Combined Mayoral Authority and proposed Investment Zone via the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities . The site is rural, with reasonable proximity to several large settlements.
ADMINISTRATIVE BOUNDARIES
The maps that follow (slide 01-12), start at regional scale and zoom into site scale. Users can navigate through these horizontally by clicking on the right and left arrows.
The key is expanded by clicking on the icon at the bottom left corner of each map and is drilled in and out of the individual maps using the + and – buttons.
Spatial Principles
Overview
To apply the thematic principles, eight spatial principles have been created. These are not exhaustive or fixed but aim to provide a path to the practicalities of realising the vision.
STEP is currently a publicly funded development which aims to demonstrate a commercial pathway to fusion, as such, achieving value for money is a core underlying principle of the programme.
1. Promote a development that responds to the existing on-site infrastructure, natural assets, and other opportunities.
2. Improve site wider accessibility and encourage active travel and sustainable transport of people and goods.
3. Create an integrated green and blue infrastructure network.
4. Promote a happy, sociable and healthy work environment that encourages meeting and interaction.
5. Connect with the existing communities creating significant socio-economic benefits.
6. Respond to local identity and distinctiveness.
7. Promote clean growth and environmental innovation.
8. Optimise operational function and efficiency for the whole site.
The sketches below (slides 1-8), provide a high-level illustration of the eight spatial principles behind the concept for the campus. The users can navigate through these by scrolling down.
Phasing
The phasing diagrams conceptualise the evolution of the campus over the coming decades. This is indicative only and will change over time. Users can use the interactive slider to compare the phases.
