Getting Squirrelly

A look at Asheville's Flying Squirrel running course

Saturday (6/3/2023) saw the second annual occurence of Asheville's  Flying Squirrel 10 Miler . As can be expected (and is almost inevitable) in our area, there were hills. Indeed, The Flying Squirrel embraces this aspect, challenging runners with an epic ascent up Sunset Mountain.

Below is my blow-by-blow unofficial tour of the race route. Perhaps it can provide a bit of nostalgia to those who participated this year and some intel for those who plan to run in the future.

Whereas typical rundowns might use mile markers as dividing points, this one segments the course by vibe. Changes in difficulty, environment, and scenery are noted.

Photos, unless otherwise attributed, were taken by me -- mostly on the day before the race while I was reconnoitering the run. Hence, the ghost town feel. These same roads were teeming with undaunted climbers on Saturday!

Disclaimer: Distances are approximate, and observations are my own.

Looking forward to next year's Flying Squirrel!

This event was some solid  Type II Fun ! I'll be back!
