Southern Water Catchment Management

PR24 planning

This interactive website sets out the issues and drivers for Southern Water's catchment management work, as well as where we are working to protect water resources and drinking water quality via nature-based solutions.

How do I navigate this website?

Either scroll down this page to see each topic in turn, or use the headings above to skip to your topic of interest. The section "Bringing it all together" allows you to see all the data on one map.

Context and Drivers

The below slideshow sets out why we are ensuring we embed catchments and natural capital into our decision making

Drivers and issues

The map below shows our drinking water catchments, both surface water (blue) and groundwater (grey), with our strategic priorities shown in darker colours. Hotspots for surface water quality issues are highlighted in red. Zoom in to see WFD catchments and RNAG (reasons for not achieving Good condition).

Drivers and issues

Drinking water - AMP7 programme

The map below shows strategic drinking water quality and water resources schemes and investigations being undertaken in AMP7, under WINEP and/or DWI drivers.

AMP7 strategic (regulatory) project areas

Drinking water - AMP8 and beyond

The following map shows the provisional strategic drivers for AMP8 relating to drinking water quality and water resources, comprising WINEP and/or DWI drivers for groundwater and surface water sources. Water quality projects are shown in solid colours and water resources investigations in hatched lines.

The map also includes delivery mechanisms and local projects that are expected to continue into AMP8. Some layers are only visible at a greater zoom scale.

Wastewater

The map below shows the 381 wastewater systems (marked in brown), showing the BRAVA results for each of the 14 DWMP Planning Objectives (PO): band 0 (not significant), band 1 (moderately significant) or band 2 (very significant). A summary of BRAVA results per river basin catchment and draft investment needs tables for each wastewater system taken to ODA can be found at the following location U:\Digital Images\Catchment Risk Team\DWMP. Of the 381 systems, the map also shows:

  • The 61 systems taken to options development and appraisal stage (ODA) of Drainage and Wastewater Management Plan (DWMP) (red)
  • Those overlapping with priority drinking water catchments (blue), and
  • The systems for which a pathfinder project is underway (green).

Drinking water catchments are also displayed on the map, flagging the groundwater catchments identified as being at risk from nitrate (shown in light blue) or pathogenic viruses (pink) due to wastewater. All surface water catchments are shown in orange and the priority catchments for water quality are displayed yellow.

Spills from combined sewer overflows, pumping stations, wastewater treatment works etc are colour coded using the BRAVA banding 0, 1, or 2 representing the annual spill frequency based on the 40/10/10 criteria (freshwater, bathing water, shellfish waters).

 PLEASE NOTE:

  1. The DWMP information shown above is DRAFT and should be treated in confidence. The nature of the DWMP means we are sharing information about our assets and performance that could be sensitive to our business. Please do not circulate or share the information further.
  2. The DWMP sets out the need for investment in our wastewater systems to reduce the risks identified.  This is not a commitment by Southern Water to any programme of action or the funding of schemes to reduce the risks. The DWMP investment needs will inform our business planning and discussions with Ofwat on what we are able to fund in the future and when

Bringing it all together

The map below brings together all of the above topics and data layers, with the aim of allowing the user to focus in on a specific area and view all of the drivers and current and planned projects on a single map.

The map contains a lot of data, so it is recommended to use the multiple 'Layer list' buttons on the top right to select which data layers you would like to view by category (e.g. Drinking water, Wastewater, Designated sites) (hover over the buttons to show the category). Some layers will only appear when you zoom further into the map. Selected layers are editable, allowing comments to be added and features to be changed or added.
