East Range Trail Networks
A new single track bike system at Giants Ridge gives us one of the region's most impressive networks and connecting multi-use trails to other areas. The Mesabi Trail joins us to the rest of the Range via a paved trail.
The East Range snowmobile trails connect the region to other Range communities, the North Shore, and the Ely area, creating a sprawling network sure to satisfy any rider. The Ranger Snowmobile and ATV Club grooms local trails, which provide access to the downtowns of Biwabik, Aurora, and Hoyt Lakes.

The East Range's Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) network is the pride of the region. Policy innovations allow for OHV use on designated state and county roads, creating a robust system that unites all parts of the East Range. A proposed connection from Biwabik to Gilbert will provide access to the Iron Range OHV State Recreation Area , Minnesota's premier OHV park. Local trails are maintained by the Ranger Snowmobile and ATV Club .

Paved trails offer recreation opportunities by bicycle or by foot for people of any level of ambition or fitness level. The 135-mile Mesabi Trail , which is nearing completion of a corridor, has long been one of the Range's crown jewels. It cuts through Biwabik and the Giants Ridge area and includes a spur into Aurora, where it joins up with a beautiful loop around the St. James Pit. Planning work is under way to connect Aurora to Hoyt Lakes, where trails connect the town out to scenic Fisherman's Point on Whitewater Lake.

The newest addition to the East Range trails network is its natural surface biking trails. Major investments at Giants Ridge have created the largest lift-served mountain bike park in the Midwest , allowing users to ride up the slopes in summer and spend a full day exploring this expanding system. Riders who'd like to head further afield can follow our regional all-purpose trail network to connect into downtown Biwabik, Aurora, or Hoyt Lakes.
