An intensive look at how to preserve nature, specifically trees, rather than replace it with the latest and greatest. This application was originally created by Ava Valdés, a Youth Forest Council member, as part of a Community Action Project (2021).

What exactly does preservation over innovation mean? What exactly does this look like in modern society? How do we implicate this in our lives?

Well, trees are essential parts of a community's natural infrastructure; They sequester carbon, filter contaminants in the air, prevent erosion, and support ecosystems. Additionally, they are widely beneficial to humans – they reduce crime, increase property value, and reduce noise pollution.

After looking at my community, West Austin, I determined that one of the largest problems is sourced by an overall lack of awareness and the misinformation effect. Similar to other socioeconomically privileged regions of the U.S., there is a culture of honor surrounding lawn maintenance and the beautification of one's property. Citizens across the United States take pride in their perfectly trimmed hedges and crisply cut lawn. At times, this obsession takes away from the environmental benefits nature provides. Still, if this goal (to have a beautiful yard) continues it could severely impact our environment.
