Slavery in New York
Difference in North and South
Slavery in the North was significantly different than slavery in the south. When we're taught about slavery in school, we are taught about how slaves were treated in the South but the North was different as well. Slaves were treated differently depending on where they were. Northern Slaves had a bit more freedom compared to Southern slaves.
Some Northern slaves had the ability to travel and meet their loved ones while others were able to get some sort of basic education. It's interesting to see why so many slaves were runaways from places such as Long Island. Northern slaves were also more domesticated in comparison to Southern slaves. Southern slaves were confined to duties on plantations while Northern slaves did housework and ran errands for their owners.
