52B FORMER MOLINE HARDWARE & TEMPLES SPORTING GOODS
524 6TH AVE
This two-story commercial building was built in 1917 by Calvin Ainsworth for his Moline Hardware Store. It is architecturally notable for its dropped cornice with its mini brackets and the upper windows framed with terra cotta tiles. The street level facade is covered with Glass Vitrolite panels, popular in the 1950’s.
The Hardware closed in the late 1940’s and Guy Temple of Temples Sporting Goods moved his business from across the street where it had been since 1928. He needed a larger store to accommodate all things sports including their custom apparel, local team uniforms and sports trophy’s. Temples would remain at this location until 2018 when it relocated to Bettendorf.
