School choice
School choice summary and background.
The topic was school choice which has to do with vouchers. School vouchers are education tax dollars that are diverted from public schools to help subsidize the tuition of private and religious schools. Thomas Paine, the philosopher of the revolutionary War, may have been the advocate of the school vouchers. Committed to educating citizens for democracy, and in the absence of a public school system, Paine proposed providing money to individuals so that they could pay for their own education. That money would almost certainly have been used in a religious school, since most schools of the time were founded by Protestant ministers to educate faithful. The school vouchers promotes the use of public school funds to help families pay for private school education or allow students to attend public schools outside their home districts. This program through using the public school funds will led to the closing of public schools. With this program only students with high academic performance are allowed to get a chance of vouchers, this means other students are left out which will limit their academic performance. This system enables the growth of religious schools, in religious schools students are taught a certain religious belief, this will be a problem for students with different religious beliefs. Through this system private schools eliminate public schools through using their funds. Competition of market amongst schools which can affect the learning of negatively education.
Vouchers.
This map layer shows states in the USA with the system of school vouchers. On this layer I used a free hand edit to make the borders of the states. I had to choose a different color from others for someone to know which layer is vouchers. When analyzing this vouchers map layer, in the USA there is only eight states in the country plus the Washington DC with the system of vouchers only. With the help of the map, these states majority of them are found the East of the country.
Scholarship tax credits.
This layer represents the different states in the USA with scholarship credits. Using a free handed editor to draw the borders and a color blue to shade, the map can be clear and be easy to tell what these states are and where they located. When I analyzed this map layer, I found out that only seven out of fifty states in the country offer scholarship tax credits only without vouchers. This means that in the states above only scholarship tax credits are offered but not vouchers.
Both vouchers and scholarship tax credits.
the map layer above shows states in USA with the system of scholarship tax credits and vouchers in schools. I used a free handed editor to come up with visible state layers on the map then I shaded it light blue to be different from others to easy identification. After I analyzed this map carefully and researched well on this topic. I found out that only six of the fifty states in country have both scholarships tax credits and vouchers in their education system.
Global, national or connection.
Vouchers are mainly designed to give opportunity to help families pay for private school education using using public school funds. This is an important issue to discuss and oppose by any means. This system is set public schools down and raise private schools which unfair for students who can’t afford to pay tuition to go to private schools. What would happen if students who can’t afford to go to private schools or get high academic performance to get vouchers? Well these students will end up going on the streets which will increase high rates of theft. Unemployment these students in private will end up having no jobs or if for instance they got jobs their jobs won’t be well paying as those who went to private schools. Public school help students to go to school without worrying about tuition which limits the rate of illiteracy. This also results into competition of market amongst schools which is not good for the education of the students.
Solutions.
To solve this problem there some of measures that can be taken. The reduction on school of private school tuition in order for families to afford their children’s school fees if they want them to attend private school. Private schools should not use public school funds instead students who wish to join private schools and have enough money to pay the tuition for these private school should be the ones to attend private schools. The education board should set. These school-choice policies promise to give students access to the education that best fits their needs. If parents did not have the means to send their children to a private school, their children had no choice but to attend their local public school, even if the school offered a poor education or did not meet their specific needs.
Reflection.
The reason to why I chose this topic as a current student I feel like this is a problem that would affect my education if I was opposed to it. I chose this topic because this a current issue that is happening in the country already and it has affected the students learning. In this project I learned what vouchers are this is something I wasn’t aware of. Throughout this project I learned how to create maps which is something I didn’t see myself doing. I hope the audience would be aware of what vouchers are and if their children were face with this they would know how to deal with it. If anyone is not affected with this he or should definitely care because this a current issue which is affecting the economy of the country which will affect most the population.
