Science Adventure School

A week in the life of a 2019 SAS student

I know you might not believe it, but there was enough room for four of us in here!

1

Day Two

The first thing we did in the morning was have breakfast in the dining hall. We had my favorite breakfast. French toast sticks!

2

In phenology class, we learned about seasons and how different kinds of plants and animals come out at different times of the year. We did a scavenger hunt to see what was at camp while we were there.

3

Later, we went to rock climbing. One neat thing we learned about was how rope was made. You have to twist it a lot to make it work! Then we went climbing. I was a little nervous to come down when I got to the top, but my teammates encouraged me all the way down.

4

In science identity class, we drew picture of what we thought scientists looked like. Mine had big frizzy hair like the guy from Back to the Future and I made lightning bolts come out from his head because of all the ideas in his brain. Then our leaders showed us pictures of everyday people and had us guess what they did. It turns out they were all scientists. One girl was even a pro-wrestler! We talked about how anyone could be scientists. It made me think that maybe I could do science someday if I wanted to.

5

Our very last class today was the canopy tour. We got to go zip lining! While we went, our guides told us all about the forest we were zipping through. Neat stuff about the trees and how the forest works and stays healthy.

6

After dinner, we had evening discussion where we talked about different topics and wrote in our journals. Tonight, we talked about how you can stay positive to overcome challenges.

7

This time for evening activity, I chose to go to the planetarium. NASA, like where the astronauts are, sent it! I didn't even know NASA was in West Virginia! It was like a big blow up ball that we all crawled into and it had stars all over the ceiling. We looked at the stars and learned about constellations and the planets up in the sky. They told us stories about how the constellation got their names too.

I don’t think I’ve told you about my leaders yet. We had two leaders who stayed with us all week. This is Mr. Max. He was really cool and fun (even though he didn’t let me touch the snake). He always helped whenever I needed it and had good stories about working at the boy scout camp.

This is Mr. Andrew. He was a STEM educator who came and taught us how the science in our activities worked. I never thought science stuff could be this fun, but he made it really easy to learn.

This is Ms. Haley. She was an environmental educator, who taught us a lot of stuff about the science in the environment around us. I liked her because she explained stuff super well and helped us learn how to ask questions about the world around us.

All the leaders were a little goofy, but they were lots of fun and really nice.

1

Day Three

This morning we started out with a wetlands activity. It was so fun! We even got to splash around in the water under the board walk.

2

Then we went to archery. Archery was cool because we talked about the science behind how bows worked and then got to practice it. When I started, I was really bad and didn’t even hit the target, but by the end of the class I was a lot better. I didn’t get a bull’s eye, but I did get really close.

3

The very last class we did was freshwater class. We hiked through the woods until we got to a little stream in the forest and then we hunted for macro-invertebrates. I think that’s what they were called – anyways we looked for little water bugs and learned about how they can mean a stream is healthy or not.

4

Before dinner, we took a hike out in nature and spent some time being quiet and looking at the world around us.

On the last night, we got to go to campfire with our group. We even got to eat s'mores!

We also sang songs and did skits. They were really silly, but a lot of fun.

1

Day Four

Oh wow, I cannot even talk about how great the Big Zip was. We were waiting all week for it and it was so scary to be up that high, but then I sat down in my harness and went for it! It felt like a roller coaster ride and I never wanted it to end!

2

Right before we left, we had a bead ceremony and it was really special. All the Brown Bats got given a bunch of beads and we had to go around to everyone in our group and say something about how they were important to us. Even our leaders and teachers. People said really nice things to me and noticed stuff about me over the week. I felt really special and like people cared about me. We all made stuff with beads, so that we could remember all the good time at camp. I made a necklace.

Science Adventure School was so amazing and fun. I learned so much and made some really good friends that I’m going to stay friends with for a long time. Even though I’m really sad to leave, I’m so happy I got to go. I’m going to remember my time here forever!
